I love the headdress on him - it makes his profile look interesting. People need to relax.

  2. Calvin says – reply to this

I don't get it. Excuse my ignorance, but why is this offensive? Isn't it a dead culture?

  3. 3

Of all people YOU should not be speaking about cultural appropriation. I seem to recall you wearing a Indian Sherwani not too long ago. If you are against this, then please tell me what right you had to wear that? Oh that's right, nothing pertains to you. You get the free pass.

It was a fucking Photoshoot using props, why has the world turned so PC! Are we gonna go and tell everyone ever who dresses up as an Indian to stop now?

  5. Jeffrey says – reply to this

I dont get what people are upset about and if you look at him he may have part native indian in him.

  6. TWang says – reply to this

The cover photo is beautifully shot, but I can see how it can offend a culture. Every celeb should KNOW by now to steer clear of anything to do with another culture other than their own ….. a bit of a sensitive subject, so play it safe rather than get shat on.

So where was the outrage when he "appropriated" the Mountie hat? That's a symbol of Canadian culture for the RCMP and shouldn't be used as a gimmick or fashion statement either. Where's the world-wide backlash for him having worn that?

This look is slighty disturbing but in a fascinating way, I just love the contrasts here and frankly between Pharrell and Kendall Jenner, photography, especially posing has become a renewed work of art. So tired of the mermaid with long curly extensions, a fake tan, a tight dress and shapeless calves: Beyonce, Mariah Carey, Ambrosio (and pretty much any model out there), Heidi Klum (for heidi, I just like her german, simple straight hair look, white skin)…..PEOPLE GO HOME!!!! THIS IS LOOK IS UGLY, BORING, REDUNDANT and CHEAP!!!

Re: Calvin – I'll try to explain this as best as possible…
You know how some things like military medals are considered a great honor and have to be earned? That is essentially a warbonnet for Natives. They aren't for fashion, they had a lot of spiritual/cultural meaning.
And some people will say that it's not a big deal or that it's honoring the culture. But if a large group of people are offended, well there's probably a reason for that. And it's not really honoring them if they aren't even going to listen to the opinions of the people in that culture.

  10. annainparis says – reply to this

Sorry, fascinating was not the word, CAPTIVATING!! Pharrell is captivating here, so was Kendall in her latest fashion pics…they make everyone else look DULL

  11. 11

I don't see anything with it. He was just wearing a headdress and it was beautifully shot. Now if he was burning the headdress, that's a different matter. A lot of people are too PC.

  12. Faith says – reply to this

I dont think its offensive, its not like he is spitting on it, i think it looks great on him. He is awesome.

  13. karen says – reply to this

If anyone but a Native American wearing these headdresses is offensive, then they need to stop selling them in tacky tourist shops in Arizona. I used to have one. Indians used my tourist dollars to buy the half leg their propped up on while they are whining about this.

  14. none says – reply to this

i really don't see the big deal, everyone loves to start controversy. its an artistic photograph. women in videos/photoshoots wear traditiona lmiddle eastern outfits and no one seems to thing its an issue…

It's a goddamn hat. Everyone needs to calm down. Perez, you're a massive douche anyway so no wonder you want to pick on people who are better than you. Who cares if it's a 'cultural' thing. You see people wearing them in photoshoots and music videos all the hat. Why? Cause it's a bloody HAT that just looks pretty. People seriously need to calm their tits down.

  17. Jules says – reply to this

Honestly this is ridiculous. The Americas (namely the US and sometimes Canada)have developed a marshmallow syndrome. You cant do anything, believe in anything, say anything without offending someone somewhere. This whole globalization of communication has become filled with stupidity. People need to grow a pair, thicken their skin and mind their own business. Also the "world" was not offended by this, it was people from the US with nothing better to do than criticise people. I'm pretty sure that people in Honduras don't give a shit about some singer wearing a native American head dress. I'm pretty sure they are more interested in the upcoming world cup series. So when you use phrases like "At worst offend the ENTIRE WORLD" think about what you're putting out there and really ask yourself "Am I offending the entire world by being presumptuous and pig headed when I call the US the entire world." And also, it looks good on him, so for those who are offended, be happy that he is actually celebrating a culture and bringing it to life.

My goodness, what is wrong with that photo?!? NOTHING!!!! #stillhappy

Oh my God no. Not an African American wearing a Native American head dress. Stop helping to spread this myth that just became someone of a different race wears something from someone else's culture its automatically racism. You're part of the problem an should be ashamed of yourself. He didn't do anything wrong and people (including yourself) need to lighten up because if this offends you, then you have issues, not them.

  21. Lindsay says – reply to this

I am not native but I can tell you that I am the minority in a strictly native majority where I live in the Southwest. Not one of my friends was offended and none of them understands the backlash.

  22. Joa says – reply to this

I can't believe this is even making news. So freaking what he wore a headdress… I didn't know cultures couldn't share garments. I don't want to live on this planet anymore. People are morons.

  23. Kelli says – reply to this

Re: Lisa – it's not just a hat, and you need to be more sensitive to other cultural teachings. If it was a symbol of something you do as a ritual practice that was worn at the improper time would offend you too. Or maybe it wouldn't because you're a heartless wench. Either way, I hope you can grasp humankind one day.

  24. Selena says – reply to this

Re: Calvin – You're an idiot, not ignorant.

  25. 25

I mean. I think it's a beautiful piece & it's a beautiful picture. I think it's okay to embrace other cultures, which I think this is. It's not okay to mock, which this is not. I see no need for an apology.

  26. NONEYA says – reply to this

This is so stupid. What next? Kids can't dress up like Ninjas for Halloween because it will offend real ninjas?

  27. kara says – reply to this

THE WORLD is outraged??? People have more respect for things and ideas than actual human beings, they will murder in name or religion and "culture"

so shut the f up PEErez

be outraged at actual bad things happening

  28. Kara says – reply to this

    Re: sick_girl

People have more respect for the headdress than for act actual Native Americans, do what is right then and give them back this country. Otherwise your comment is plain pointless.

  29. melanie says – reply to this

This is beautiful…. nobody said shit about johnny depps stupid tonto but this is amazing. get a life folks. i dressed up as an indian girl when i was little for halloween. would i get egged or attacked for doing that now?

  30. 30

Re: Kara – I don't even live in the U.S you dumb piece of shit. I was simply explaining to someone why people find it offensive.

  31. maliurj says – reply to this

Re: Jeffrey – I was thinking the same thing! What if he does? Are they upset that he is wearing the head dress or are they upset that he might have some DNA affiliation to the indigenous tribes?

  32. 32

WHO FUCKING CARES? IF it were any other ancient culture (Egyptian, Jewish, Persian, Mongolian, Celtic, Aztec, Mayan, etc.), then nobody would bat an eyelash, but since there is so much collective guilt over how we treated the proud nations that preceded us, for some reason this is inexcusible? Idiotic reasoning from a bunch of morons. Get over your PC self and try worrying about something that fucking matters.

Perez - how about fixing your pages so they don't reload right in the middle of commenter's trying to comment? Don't you score enough "hits" as it is you greedy bastard?

  33. Peter says – reply to this

You're such such a hypocrite, Perez. Lol

As a full blooded Native American, I do not find this whole head dress offensive at all. I am a huge Pharrell fan and I give him permission to represent my culture!

"offend the ENTIRE WORLD" ? "the world is OUTRAGED"?
Please stop it… You are so ridiculous! The world doesn't give a damn sh*t about it. There are 238 countries in this world that have better to do then being obssesd by US celebrities unlike you.
You ain't living in the center of the world Perez. Start learning about being modest and leave the rest of the world alone.

Re: Calvin – you're fckn stupid.

  41. juliana says – reply to this

People get pissed if a singer dresses up as Jesus on a magazine, or even does the nailed-to-the-cross pose because it alludes to comparing themselves to Jesus.

The eagle feathers are sacred to Native Americans. They are a symbol of their faith, heritage, and those who fell in war – in a pow wow, where the dancers wear eagle feathers, if a feather drops then absolutely everything stops – music, dancing, singing, everything. The elders come out to chant a blessing and pick up the feather and bring it back to the side of the dance floor. They hold the feathers and headdresses in a reverential light.

It’s no different than someone mocking Jesus for Christians, or drawing a cartoon of Muhammed for Muslims, – it isn’t just “culture appropriation,” which it is, it’s also seen as a form of religious ignorance.

White people have no culture, no identity, no language, nothing. Native american have culture and respect for things and know who we are and where we come from. So no wonder whites have no idea how we are offended cause they have nothing. They know nothing. They're just ignorant always hating and disrespecting things they done understand. I feel sorry for them.
