Talking About Depression

From Perez himself:

"Even though I have so much to be grateful for, it's been a rough few days. It's been tough forcing a smile on my face when I've had to go out. And it's been tougher trying to keep my mind from playing tricks on me. The brain is a very powerful and cunning creature!

Sharing this with you. Hopefully it helps some. Sharing this helped me!

Much love to you all. "

This is so touching. It means a lot to know that someone with such success can feel this way too. I can truly relate to this. I love you, and thanks for sharing. Always here for you

Perez, let's not make the mistake of confusing the normal ups and down and stresses of our lives with depression. Clinical depression is a whole different issue. I'm glad you have great support around you and can are 'up' again, but using the word 'depression' to describe your bout of stress may undermine those who really suffer.

It's human nature to be scared of loosing something that u love and makes u happy. That's why u get anxious.. Just take one day at the time and don't worry too much about the future. If there are problems on the way- you would also be strong enough to handle them. Trust that u can handle problems in life- so far so good right :) seriously, you'll be fine.

As i read about Mr Robins suicide i also became depressed and went into sleeping spells. And as u i started to move, move forward… i want to congratulate you on how far you've become and how even farther you will go, i know I will.

And how to feel it is really a choice:

    U all decide

    most love and respect

everyone has something going on in life, we just don't open the door to listen. So I've been doing is listening, take on daily moments of empowerment i.e. saying to people have an awesome day, it was pleasure speaking with you or just saying life brings us to many cross roads its how we choice to accept where we are at in our own spirit. Depression runs deep across the world, ones deep when you've think your ALONE, the world supports you if you open the door. I believe we all can make a difference. So this Perez is awesome. We are human, all have emotions, thought and moments. Agree that we can flip the script and see the person in the mirrors biggest fan!

Thank you so much for your honesty and showing your vulnerability. Depression can be so insidious and there is far too little attention given to the problem. It affects not only the person feeling depressed but their families too. A few days hibernating when feeling low is not a bad thing. Congratulations on reaching out to your Mum and taking the step towards positivity and happy thoughts. Good luck…..I'll be sending positive vibes out to you xo

You do not have depression. Stop glamorizing it. It's not "oh I feel sad for a few days because life is busy and I can't relax for a few hours". It's "I feel empty inside no matter what I do". You have the normal "ups and downs", typical for life.

Thanks for sharing. I myself was going through depression that I ignored and thought it was for a short amount of time. You know, you figure it's a hard patch but it wasn't. I was under so much stress my depression only got worse and my mind was breaking down. I was an emotional mess and was advised by friends to seek help because they too noticed something was wrong. What people don't realize is that when you are under depression your mind is a big cloud, you can think, or function completely. I was living with depression for about 4 months before I decided to find help. I saw a Psychiatrist and finally took care of myself. There is a huge stigma about depression or mental diseases but you are not alone. Please seek the help you need to get better. Mario, I hope things get better for you and your family. Sending hugs your way.

  13. 13

what people need to understand is depression is SO much more than "being sad" over a break up or a family member dying. its a BRAIN DISORDER. chemical imbalances of the brain. hard wiring of the brain is out of whack. Ive been suffering from severe depression since I was 20 and im now 33. Its taken me a DECADE to figure this thing out. to accept it. to know how to get help. this is the treatment plan that works for me: i see a TALK THERAPIST once a week, for an hour. it helps so much. therapists cant prescribe meds, so in addition to talk therapy I check in with a psychiatrist once a month to help monitor what kind of medication im on and the dosage. This treatment plan works FOR ME. everyone is different. it may seem like a lot of work but mental illness is like cancer or diabetes. They go to great lengths to stabilize their illnesses and depression is no different. If you feel you may need help, please dont be afraid. reach out to your doctor. the sooner you find the right treatment plan for you, the sooner you live a better quality of life. dont give up :)

Please listen to this. It has helped me greatly. Staying present really is the key. When we are doing one thing but thinking of another, it's almost always negative and leads to suffering.

Thanks so much for sharing this Perez! I'm so happy that you feel comfortable expressing your feelings with your readers. I've been following your blog virtually since the start & I've seen you grow as a person into a very caring, kind and thoughtful person. Please keep inspiring people and giving them hope and courage through your own personal trials and accomplishments. Have a great night! =)

Thank you for this Perez. I suffer from depression and am just coming out of a major one. It makes you feel less alone when we share like this. It does feel so good talking to someone and not keeping it bottled up, and of course nothing like a good cry.

Re: beth – TERRIBLE grammar there on my part! How ironic! PS- I'm a born and raised new yorker and wanting to stay here gives me anxiety everyday! I think, whether super successful or the opposite, we all fear failure tremendously and question the future constantly. Thanks for sharing this, Perez.

    1. I am not watching your video because you are a notorious drama queen and you've probably had a few shitty days and now you want attention.
    2. I am convinced most of these commenters are your fake accounts to make it look like your really helping people out here.

  23. 23

okay I watched 45 seconds but as soon as you said you cancelled the gym for 3 days forfuckingget about it how about try not being able to leave the darkness of your bedroom to even eat for days and days on end? that is depression. Skipping a few days at the gym is called being human.

  24. Say What says – reply to this

Depression is more than just sadness. What you, sir, are describing is stress. Clinical depression is so much more then being sad and sleeping or cancelling the gym for a few days. When I saw the title of this video, I thought "Oh great, now he's glamorizing depression." After watching this video, I know that you are not intending to glamorize depression, but at the same time, I don't think you have educated yourself enough about depression in order to make a correct self diagnosis. I may not suffer from clinical depression, but I do know what stress can do and that sometimes stress can mimic the signs and symptoms of depression….education…education…education..

  26. slurpEgirl says – reply to this

You do not suffer from depression. You talking about this as if "Oh look I'm depressed too" depression is a long struggle with life not a few days event with stress. You should be ashamed for trying to put yourself in the same catagory. I suffer from depression for years now and what you describe is everyday parenting stress. If you don't have enough money, put your kid in public school like the rest of us!

Instructions For a Bad Day by Shane Koyczan.

    "There will be bad days.

Be calm. Loosen your grip, opening each palm slowly now. Let go.

Be confident. Know that "now" is only a moment, and that if "today" is as bad as it gets, understand that by tomorrow, "today" will have ended.

Be gracious. Accept each extended hand offered, to pull you back from the "somewhere" you cannot escape…."

funny, I read this site to see how other people are just as messed up as I am. It's strange to see that people with money have the same tragic events as the rest of the us. and somehow, it makes my tragedy seem less tragic.

Thank You Perez!!! This was a lovely, real and down to earth post on something that so many people go through. it made me think about how I shut down sometimes. Sleeping too much and not connecting with friends and family. In a way it feels good to be in a little cocoon, but it you don't find a way to break out of it eventually you will shrivel up. I feel that having kids (I have two girls) ads a certain weight to your life. The adage that when you have kids your heart is now outside your body is so true. You feel so vulnerable and responsible for these innocent little creatures. I offer this song for you and your family, I swear to all that is good that I didn't just post this to promote myself. Check out track #7 Love is Love

Perez I hv been at odds with you since you began your site. I have a like hate relationship with you. But this video literally hit in my core. I'm a mother of one little boy and sufferer with depression for 3yrs. I deal with it in silience. Mainly for my son. He keeps me going. But it's nice to see that you are human. And even though I do not believe in your life style,I do not jugde you. But I think deep down inside your a nice person. I've seen a growth in you and a change for the better. And well you don't anyones validation that just my opinion.

Thank you for sharing . . . but I find it odd that you did not talk about long term depression. As a overweight young man and a bullied teen, doesn't that depression haunt you as well? then again this is all very public and I can respect you only sharing so much. It's been a terrible early summer for me . . . only now getting better. just all that RL shit can really pile on! and having a family just makes it more high pressure. I LOVE what you are doing with your life and little Mario and I will have your back from my little corner of the internet as long as we are out here.

I am reading these comments, and some of these are just awful. I want to first and foremost say HATS OFF to Perez for opening up and sharing his thoughts and feelings. They are FAR too prevalent in this world, and the bottom line is that no one is speaking up. The more people bring these issues into conversation, the more "human" everyone feels who does suffer from depression and anxiety. Simply said, they are not talked about enough.

  39. Shiny says – reply to this

Awwwww … Thank you SO much, Perez. I've been battling those very same feelings for the past 3-4 days too, and you just picked me right up. It's so hard to explain to people why or how you feel the way you do, but just knowing that you were going through similar thoughts makes it easier to deal with. Keep it real, Perez ! Much respect !

    Hello There,
This is so so normal. Do not feel alone, do not focus on the stress. MOST OF US ARE NOT MAKING ENOUGH MONEY… dont let that get to you. Think of the great support you have, your baby, your family and everything you have done and how much you have accomplished in the last ten years. Stay strong! Also, back to the gym!!!
    Mucho animo!

I have never posted here before, but felt compelled to do so. Thank you for using your public platform for taking a first step in talking about depression on your site. Like so many things in our world that have taken years, decades, sometimes centuries to recognize and come to terms with (racism, homosexuality, disabilities, gender roles, etc.) … depression has always existed and is only just now starting to be seen and recognized as a real thing, a real problem that affects millions of people every day. By starting a conversation about depression, however small, the stigma of those who suffer (and sadly sometimes feel compelled to take their own lives) will begin to slowly diminish, creating a culture that starts to understand it, accept it for what it is and empower those who suffer to feel accepted, to not feel isolated and alone, to seek treatment and to feel hope. Learn as much as you can about it, Perez, and proceed with the good work of continuing the conversation. Thank you.

    Just what I needed to hear. I've had a rough week. A death in the family, relational issues, and poor eating choices. You're right, the brain is a trickster at times. Thanks for reaching out, I feel a bit more like a human! (;

Come on! Just another way to be relevant. Just cos depression is the "in" thing now, you're all about being depressed and shit. Fuck off Perez. Why didn't you speak of being depressed In the past? Stop trying to be a damn victim. If you have any sort of disorder, it's definitely being a fucking sociopath.

You are a disgusting, vile, hypocritical, delusional, pig-faced human being, more hideous on the inside than the outside. The only reason we come here is to read the poorly written gossip you (mostly) stealk from other sites. Perez! You're stressing over "stuff". You aren't depressed. Depression goes much deeper into the psyche than what u're experiencing. It lasts for years and you have no control over what's depressing you. Don't sweat the small stuff. Be grateful and enjoy your blessings. Don't make mountains out of mole hills. Always, always, always look to the brighter side. Think about how lucky you are and count your blessings.

Thank you for sharing. I've had a few blue days this week myself. Parenting in general can be overwhelming, add being a single parent and start thinking about the future, and things can get crazy. You're doing a great job. I've seen you grow so much over the last few years. I'm proud of you.

Beware the "depression voice". It's the lying voice that says you are worthless or you can't do something. It's the voice saying that you shouldn't go outside of your house or see anyone. Try to do the opposite of that. Go out. Tell people how you are feeling. Thank you for the vulnerability.

Re: NoOne – Who are you to say someone doesn't have depression? Shame on you.

  58. AmyC says – reply to this

Hey, Mario - thanks for sharing this.
I go through the same kinds of periods where I get anxious about what's going on and what's going to happen next and my thoughts start to race and then I get overwhelmed and it paralyzes me, like I just want to hide under the covers until it goes away.
I'm a little miffed at some of the comments on here siting the nuances between depression and sadness, but not because those nuances are being talked about! My God, we need more public discussion of this stuff! But because the way some folks are talking about it feels a little like it's meant to diminish whatever sadness you've been feeling over the past few days.
NOBODY'S feelings are worth any less than anyone else's, whether you call it depression, sadness, chemical imbalance, busy brain, etc. Keep sharing; for as many folks as throw shit your way, there are like 10 times more people who can relate and are taking something from what you did here… <3

  59. Hilary C says – reply to this

It is very courageous what you did with the video, and I am not aware that you suffered from depression. There is a difference between having a couple bad days and having negative thoughts come in, and having clinical depression. I suffer from clinical depression, OCD, and an anxiety disorder; I do, very well, understand what you were speaking about in your video, but you might want to clarify whether you do suffer from clinical depression or you had a few really bad days. For people who don't know better, they might start to think they suffer from depression if they also have 3 bad days in a row. ALL JUST A SUGGESTION!! =) Also, I know I am a person you do not know, but I have been dealing with my diagnosis for 5 years now and have developed a lot of grounding techniques for when my depression or anxiety or both become overwhelming. I would be happy to share if you would care to email me back =). It's all about helping and educating people on these disorders and how to handle them. Much love Perez and happy you found a way to ground yourself! <3

  60. Whitney says – reply to this

    Hi Perez.
I just wanted to say you aren't alone. We all can get that way. I myself found my depression triggered recently. Thank God for family, good friends, and hopeful possibilities. Do what makes you happy and figure it out as you go. I worry too but what I have learned through life if it's right it will always work itself out.

  61. ohmy says – reply to this

You only made this video because of Robin Williams recent passing. You have no clue what it is to be clinically depressed to the point that you are just empty and nothing keeps you tethered to this world. You are repugnant.

  62. TDH says – reply to this

I don't know what's going on with you Perez in a deeper, more personal level, but what you are describing in this video is not clinical depression. It sounds like you are encountering the normal stresses of budgeting money and contemplating making large life decisions regarding your future. Managing money and changing your lifestyle is stressful and causes temporary sadness, but it's something everybody goes through in life, and it is very different from clinical depression. If you are worried that you could be clinically depressed, I suggest you make an appointment with your doctor.

  63. Sarah E. says – reply to this

thanks for your honesty! I too get overwhelmed especially if I watch the news….it's good to be a public figure that shows life is not perfect, even with a successful business….

  64. 64

You are normal in the ever growing crazy world. I have social anxiety and stay at home a lot. I was talking with my sister the other day about growing up. We didn't have cell phones, over the top media…we lived pretty stress free, loved our family and raised our kids the best we could. It's hard to keep up with the sadness in this world right now. A hug right back to you and positive thoughts coming your way.

  65. 65

    Re: AmyC – Well said.

  66. 66

Re: NoOne – and you know this how? It's slams like this that put people in a bigger depression. It's not your depression, so how would you honestly know. Sending you nothing but positive vibes and hope for understanding.

  69. 69

DO NOT pretend to jump on the depression bandwagon you attention slut. REAL depression is far more than just not going to the gym for 3 days or feeling sad & overwhelmed for a few days. You are going through the COMMON ups and downs of life - NOT depression! And while you were sleeping all the time who was taking care of your son?

Re: michellt – There's a huge difference between feeling depressed and having depression. I would know because when i was younger I had a lot of suicidal thoughts and at times I wanted to kill myself because of how sad I was but I don't have depression. i was just really depressed because i was going through a tough time in my life. I think some people just get being depressed and having depression confused. I don't know if perez really have depression, but having depression is much deeper than feeling sad; it's a mental disorder and a person can't just diagnose themselves with it they would have to go to a doctor like any other disorder. From what he has said, i think perez is probably stressed out and it that might be causing him to feel depressed.. but then again I don't know if he went to a doctor and they diagnosed him…

Perez, you're awesome. Please do not listen to the people who are criticizing you. Depression is a wide spectrum, so is sadness and all the like… suffering is a subjective feeling and no one should criticize you for trying to reach out or try to tell you "you aren't suffering". You've touched a lot of people by posting this video and the people criticizing you should be ashamed of themselves. Pat yourself on the back. I have severe PTSD and every time I read your website I forget all about my suffering - and it made me feel better about my struggles, knowing that other people struggle with sadness. Our nation has a long way to go with these taboo issues and you're brave to reach out. Smiles!
