Last year's show boomed with a whopping 10.1 million viewers of the initial broadcast, but 2014 marked a BIG drop - down to 8.3 mil.
But does that mean fewer people were watching? Or that fewer people were watching live on TV? After all, MTV's key demo is a generation that knows how to get its shows when it wants, where it wants, how it wants.
There definitely were people paying attention; around 5.4 million more viewers tuned in for encores.
And Nielsen estimates there were around 12.6 million #VMA related tweets! That's a lot of conversation if people weren't watching…
