That's ridiculous! In number of hits, chart placement, and longevity, it's Madonna on top.

  2. 2

If we are talking about POP stars then it's either madonna or michael jackson. I wouldn't categorize mariah carey as a pop star. She's more R and B.

Seems legit….. Mariah's had more then 20 something songs to actually HIT number 1 on billboard… Michael probably hasn't as had as many #1 singles as his albums usually hit #1 instead. Madonna has had A LOT of songs enter the charts, but no where near as many number 1's as Mariah.

Re: Moka – She doesnt have the talent, longevity, and …#1s that Mariah has.

Seriously?!? Who made this ridiculous list… It's laughable how off it is….boys 2 men???

I agree with Mariah, Madonna, Whitney, Michael, Janet, but Boys II Men and Katy Perry?! And I'm not surprised Madonna isn't #1 because although she's successful, Mariah has a lot more street credibility (and credibility in general to be fair in terms of actual talent). Out of all the divas, Mariah is the one the younger generation are most likely listening too and is the only one to have actually had proper 'classic' bonefied successes/hits since the 90s.

Mariah is a special talent, but statistics and lists can perennially be arranged to make just about anything come out on top. Apart from quantifiable tune and box office sales, trying to compare performers is like apples and oranges. After uber millions, how much is enough?
If the performer enjoys the work, and their fans and audience love it, then there you go.

Just like Vogue mag with their Kardashian/West cover, Time mag just lost their credibility… Everybody in the world knows that Madonna and Michael Jackson are the ultimate pop stars and artists. Carey,Janet,B2M,Usher and Rihanna should'nt be on the list at all!

Finally a true unbiased statistical ranking proving that Mariah is the true QUEEN of pop!!!!

Another example of why Time magazine has become the "Star" magazine of the news mags. This list is a joke.

Mariah Carey has the award of the Millennium along with the award of singer of the decade and hersong "We Belong Together" has been named song of the decade. I question Rihanna and Katy Perry entrances considering that they are not real singers, they can't sing a line without screeching. At least Katy Perry writes her own songs. Rihanna success is only backed up by having great songwriters, her nudity acts won't take her that far. The only way to achieve longevity is by having legendary songs like Mariah Carey's "Hero", being hell of a singer like Whitney Houston or being a music icon while at the same time having changed the way the music industry moves like Madonna and Michael Jackson did, who opened the doors for incredible stuff. I would have traded Usher for Celine Dion and that's truth, she deserved to be on top of the list, she has been rowing the boat since she was 12 years old.

Michael Jackson at #8?? Are you serious?! What lame ass put this list together? But then Time has been about as friendly to MJ as Rolling Stone so I wouldn't expect any better from them.

  16. 16

Maybe, but she has lost her fan base…so it's not of all time.

This list is ridiculous. Madonna and Michael Jackson should at least be above Usher. Btw, where are Britney and Beyonce???

    20

Mariah is right up there with Michael Jackson, Madonna and Whtney Houston. Haters will always hate. She's a great singer and an even better song writer.

  21. real person says – reply to this

I guess Beyonce isn't the queen after all because time magazine went by sales

This is ridiculous to say the least Billboard stated that Madonna is the most successful solo artist in the history of their charts only surpassed by The Beatles. . Rihanna at #2 clearly shows some one at Time didn't do their research or their a big Mariah fan in denial. Mariah singles where driven by payola airplay hardly makes her more successful than Madonna who has charted for 30 plus years.

  23. PDC1987 says – reply to this

    23

Yeah, perhaps Time should have consulted Billboard on this. Time claims they used Billboard Hot 100 chart histories to compile this list, yet the publication that owns and publishes the chart completely begs to differ about their rankings. Billboard already has an official list ranking the most successful artists ever on their Hot 100 singles chart, and Mariah isn't #1. Methinks Mariah and her PR team slipped some money Time's way.

    The official Billboard list:

I honestly stopped at no. 2
I think all the artists mentioned are great, BUT…
Michael number 8?? no, just no. Michael Jackson and Madonna should be at the very top…then maybe Mariah Carey (the no 1's she has also includes songs she's redone…so, yeah, not like Michael and Madonna)and so forth. The list is just unbelievably ridiculous, to say the least.
