2003 was a year of major historical events: the war in Iraq ended, Arnold Schwarzenegger was elected the Governor of California, and Ben Affleck made arguably the worst movie of the decade, Gigli.

Gigli is infamous for primarily two reasons:
1.It's ridiculously bad.
2.Jennifer Lopez also starred in the film which is significant because she and Ben were dating at the time. The movie is one of the few remaining testaments to their much talked-about relationship!
Before Gigli, Ben had made a respectable name for himself in the movie business with serious films like Good Will Hunting(for which he won an Oscar), and Pearl Harbor.
Given Ben's resume prior to Gigli, it confused critics and fans as to why he decided to star in a film about a goofy Los Angeles 'mobster' who is ordered to kidnap the mentally handicapped brother of his boss' rival. Pegged as a 'romantic-comedy,' Gigli failed to deliver on both the romance and the comedy.

The film was universally panned by critics and Richard Roeper called it a "disaster" and "one of the worst movies" he ever saw. The film made his list of 100 worst movies of the decade at #7.
After Gigli, fans and critics wondered if Ben would ever bounce back from the major flop. After a few years of medicare films (and a break-up from JLo), Affleck made The Town, a widely praised crime drama. Following The Town, Ben struck gold with Argo, another thriller he directed and starred in.
Now that Ben is back in critics' and fans' good graces, it's hard to remember that dark period before major successes like Gone Girl.
Ben once said of Gigli and 2003:
"It was definitely the annus horribilis. I got shorthanded as That Guy — Jennifer Lopez, movies bombed, therefore he must be a sort of thoughtless dilettante, solipsistic consumer, blah blah blah."
We're glad Ben was able to resurrect his acting career from the ashes of Gigli and that he has become the leading man we always knew he was destined to be!!
