When you're Aretha Franklin, you never have to hold back what you think!

And she doesn't!

The singer sat down with the Wall Street Journal to talk about her new album, Aretha Franklin Sings the Great Diva Classics, and during the 10 minute interview, she was asked what she thought about singers Adele, Alicia Keys, and Whitney Houston, and she had complimentary things to say.

But ask her about Taylor Swift and Nicki Minaj, there was little R-E-S-P-E-C-T on a musical level!

Sounds like another washed up musician needing a little more spotlight…

Aretha is not "washed up" ^^^^ She's a legend and she is right on the money. Taylor can't sing and niki minaj just can't.

Whatever Atretha but Taylor Swift is a great songwriter!! She is not the greatest singer (and she has never claimed to be) but she writes/co-writers every single song on every album!!! Can u say the same thing?? No no u can not so how about u give someone the respect they deserve for doing something u cld never do and doing it incredible well!! Taylor is 24 and have 7 Grammys!!!! Get over yourself Aretha

Re: Kerry Anne – Kerry Anne, well said and I completely agree with you. By the way, I am closer to Aretha's age than I am to Taylor's age, but Taylor has talent and business acumen that is astonishing for someone her age.

Nicki Minaj can rap and can sing, hear her on David Guetta ”Turn me on”
She has a better voice than Madonna or Janet Jackson.
Aretha needs to clean her ears.

HA to these dweebs hating on the LEGEND that is Aretha to "protect" the awful thing that is Taylor Swift.

Re: Laurel – I cannot agree more. Aretha is a legend for a reason. Taylor does not compare at all. I feel so bad for the generations that are being brainwashed by these horrible artists. Music is not the same anymore. It's heartbreaking.

I personally have never heard of Aretha Franklin that's because I don't listen to her kind of music but I hear that she is a legend but think she could have said something better for Taylor than "beautiful gowns". I would have said great songwriter and business women. She has achieved so much in such few years. She even broke world records. You might not think she is a great singer and that's your opinion but if you listen to her songs, they are lyrically amazing. she is a great writer. And I personally don't like Nikki because I think she could do so much if she doesn't rap and sing about sex or big butts. And her new video scares me. But that's her choice but she is a good female rapper and she did make a big name for herself. You shouldn't disrespect these young women. They didn't just buy their achievements. They have talent and you shouldn't down play that. I really don't understand why couldn't say anything better than beautiful gowns. But hey that's my opinion. :)

Aretha didn't diss anyone. She verbalized the first thoughts that popped into her head at the mention of the artist's name, and merely refrained at offering anything on Minaj. Maybe she's not decided what she thinks.
Re: Tori Coop – You didn't listen to the video? Her latest album debuted at number one. She is soul legend, and as such is beyond 'washed up.'

Hmm, it's very unbecoming to talk trash about people. I don't necessarily think that was what she was doing - she didn't really bad mouth Taylor - perhaps she just doesn't really know her music. Fair enough. Meh. I don't think Taylor should be offended

As talented & iconic as this woman is, she remains one bitter and miserable human being. Been that way since I was a kid.

Re: Kerry Anne – And Aretha has 18 Grammys. But apparently you didn't listen to the interview and probably based your opinion on Perez's "throwing shade" comment, when none was thrown.

  15. KB says – reply to this

    15

Annie Lennox was right. These interviewers always put these entertainers on the spot by asking them, "what do you think of so and so," and the minute they say something that could possibly be misconstrued as negative, you get a headline saying "X shades Y." There was no shade here, Perez.

Aretha could sing the phone book, without autotune, acapella and inspire a standing ovation.

I am glad the wall street journal restored its credibility days after Swift used it as a backdrop (to gain a little bit more substance?) with Aretha's interview. Great move. please no more swift in the wall street journal and woncé talking about the challenger (and for that matter any science related theme/topic).

She has room to talk she is a legend. As far as what she is saying it's the truth and she kept it classy when it came to NM and said I'm going to pass on that one lol. She doesn't wanna say anything negative about anyone. And the man asked her it's not like she came out and just talked about everyone.

Aretha is great but when has she ever really had anything nice to say about any of today's female stars. Even the compliments sound gratuitous and insincere.

No one can shade Taylor Swift. TS is nothing short of astonishing in her accomplishments. What this woman did do was tarnish her own reputation. Maybe she is senile?

NIcki as real as her ass. Btw it's fake. Plenty if pics to prove it and she can't rap, mclyte little kim ,salt and pepper they can rap. Sing please won't even respond to that.

  24. 24

Re: jenn – Oh please. While Aretha didn't really send out shade here, there IS plenty to send towards darling Taylor. That girl needs to grow up. 24 is not a baby but she continues to act, and write, like one. She's this generation's Debbie Gibson. She's nothing new and in another 10 years there'll be another. Good god, you fan girls are stifling sometimes. You all put out that Grammy thing like it's something wonder. Milli Vanilli got one too. She's not a terrible song writer but she's not breaking any new ground either. Calling her a singer is questionable at best.

Aretha may not be a prolific songwriter, but she has written some of her biggest tunes. Taylor may write or co-write all of her songs, but they all sound the same.

"I personally have never heard of Aretha Franklin"

I guess you never heard of Steely Dan either. You'd have to listen to "Hey Nineteen" by them to get the reference.

  27. 27

So glad I grew up when I did, maybe my generation (Boomer) was not the greatest, that kudos has to go to people like my dad and uncle who fought for our liberty in WWII.
I was fortunate enough to listen to some great music growing up in the 50's and 60's including Aretha. Oh and seeing wonderful artists in concert, like Jefferson Airplane (now Starship), Grateful Dead, Led Jeppelin, Doors and so many other greats.
My mechanic accidentally turned off my Sirius radio (came with the car when I bought it a year ago) and do you know, I do not miss the radio a bit.

  32. 32

Aretha was my mom & dad's era - so I grew up listening to her. Aretha is a voice. She does not write songs or music nor does she play any instrument. She is a singer. Now, she is a "legend" of a bygone era. She did not have the awards Taylor does at the age Taylor does., She should have been gracious and given Taylor credit where she is due. She should have given Adele and Alicia better props as well. She is only up to mad props for her god-daughter or whatever she was to Whitney. Again - Whitney was a vocal talent only.

Re: kabuki girl – Actually, Aretha does write. She has written many of her hits — Think, Since You"ve Been Gone, Daydreaming, Rock Steady, Call Me, plus other selections that were on her albums. Her Spirit in the Dark album has five of her own songs. Aretha is a wonderful pianist. She plays on those early hits and on almost all of her albums. Her piano talent is similar to that of Ray Charles, Oscar Peterson.

Actually she does hold back. She's holding back to the best of her ability.

Nicki is a circus clown and Taylor sounds like a yodeling goat, and they make music for pre teens and teenagers.

  35. D. Carter says – reply to this

    35

Well, just maybe Aretha didn't know who Nicki was…. If a female singer is not high enough to threaten The Queen of Soul's crown, then she has no need to even think about such person. I believe "I'll Pass" was a very nice answer… Artist should not have to put on or lie stating they know it all when they clearly do not. Just say "I don't know" (a lot will not say that) "I'll come back to that one" or "I'll pass on that person, I don't have enough info to say a word" Which Aretha said in her own words. When you are The Queen - everything you do seems to be wrong in the public's eye. That is just the cost she has to pay - which Aretha already Knows.

    Re: kat
Yes Taylor isn't the greatest singer of all time, but she's a really good song writter, nobody can say the opposite… Yes Aretha is a really great singer, but she didn't wrote most of her songs. If I have to choose between someone who just have a really great voice but sings other people songs and someone who has a nice voice and write all her own songs then the choice isn't hard for me. Aretha Franklin doesn't create music, Taylor does and that's what it makes her a great artist. I think Aretha Franklin just needed the spotlight for her new album…

  37. G says – reply to this

    37

Re: Karel – Why does she need the spotlight? She's been around for over 50 years. Aretha didn't just randomly bring up Taylor. She was ASKED about her.

  38. guy96 says – reply to this

    38

Good for her, totally agree I am so tired of Taylor Swift, really is there anything more boring and tired than her music. It is music for screaming little girls who are having their first periods, but unfortunately, there the ones buying music and songs at $1,99 on itune these days and making these mediocre artists break records. TS hasn't invented anything new. However N. Minaj is talented, she has a nice voice and can rap good!!!!

Re: Karel – Big deal. She writes her own songs. So do countless other artists. You people act like she's some Kate Bush or Joni Mitchell.

    Re: Karel
" Aretha Franklin doesn't create music, Taylor does and that's what it makes her a great artist."

Creating music doesn't just begin with songwriting. Aretha not only writes songs, a fact you conveniently omitted, but she has taken songs others have recorded and has given her own interpretation on them. "Respect" was a song originally recorded by Otis Redding, but everyone associates it with Aretha. I would love for you to tell Barbra Streisand, who has been creating music for 50 years, that she doesn't create music because she's mostly known as a singer.

Pick up her greatest hits and listen a few times over. You won't feel the same.

Haters gonna hate, hate, hate!!!! Love Taylor Swift!! Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, as in music is in the ear of the beholder!!! To each their own, that is the beauty of freedom!!!
