Monday night's episode of Dancing With the Stars marked the season's quarter final episode, and it did not disappoint!
Not only was an elimination looming over the contestants, but the episode was also America's Choice AND the Trio Challenge.
Basically, DWTS kicked our final six into high gear, making everyone learn TWO new dances.
Are you ready?
Here we go!
Alfonso Ribeiro and Witney Carson were first to dance, and were assigned a Foxtrot to Robbie Williams' 'Aint That a Kick in the Head. It was a nice way to start off the show, and we were pleasantly surprised that Alfonso didn't receive a perfect score, and in fact only got a 37 out of 40.
Second to perform, yet first to be called safe, were Tommy Chong and Peta Murgatroyd. We're so happy that the couple is safe, because Peta might just be our favorite pro left in the competition! America chose a Viennese Waltz for Tommy, and it really looks like Peta trained him well, because he showed none of the leg-issues that plagued him last week and they scored a 29.
Lea Thompson and Artem Chigvintsey were third to dance, and were given a Samba to Maroon 5's Animals. What shocked us most is how well Adam Levine's hit translated over to ballroom. Lea embraced her role on the show, and dressed as a cougar as she scored a 34. Sidenote: why did Julianne Hough feel the need to compare her own body to that of a 53-year-old's? That was a little weird!
The fourth pair to dance to America's suggestions was Derek Hough and Bethany Mota, who were given the second Viennese Waltz of the night. Bethany gave a really heartfelt performance about first loves, and earned herself and Derek a score of 36.
Sadie Robertson jived with Mark Ballas on the dance floor to JMSN's 1, 2, 3, Turnaround. Her kicks were pretty sloppy, which was unfortunate because the whole dance was made up of kicks. She definitely had to rely on her second dance to improve her score of 33.
Last to dance in round one were last week's leaders, Janel Parrish and her
lover partner Val Chmerkovskiy. Our favs danced a Quickstep and we FINALLY got the kiss we've been waiting for all season! Their lip-lock earned them a near-perfect 38!
Round two kicked off with Alfonso and Witney being joined by fellow SYTYCD alum Lindsay Arnold and performing a truly amazing Paso Doble. We aren't Alfonso's biggest fans, but that really was a performance that we couldn't look away from. The trio rightfully earned the first perfect score of the night!
Sharna Burgess joined Tommy and fellow Aussie Peta for an airline-inspired Samba. We loved the weed references, the costumes, and the set, it was just the dancing that left a bit to be desired. With that said, it was easily the most entertaining dance of the
night season and earned the trio a 28.
Lea and Artem picked Henry Byalikov to join them for their Paso Doble. It was going to be impossible for anyone to live up to Alfonso's Paso, and Lea just wasn't able to match his energy. However, Lea, Henry, and Artem were certainly hot enough to earn them a 36.
Ever the game-player, Derek chose past Mirror Ball winner Tony Dovolani to dance with himself and Bethany. The trio gave a pretty great Argentine Tango, but we're tired of every package of theirs being about making excuses for potential mistakes. With that said, the trio scored a very solid 38.
Last week's eliminated pro Emma Slater was chosen to dance alongside Sadie and Mark as they performed a Foxtrot that earned the trio an undeserved 40. We don't really know what the judges are talking about, because Sadie herself knew she messed up, and it's just another case of them judging her less harshly than the other contestants. Although, aside from the mistake, Sadie really did keep up with Emma!
Janel and Val asked Keo Motsepe to join them for a stellar salsa, and it just made us sad that Keo only got to dance for one week this season! Their performance seemed super hard, almost too hard, but Janel really kept up with her two pros, earning their trio a score of 39.
With round two over and Tommy and Peta already announced safe, it was time to see which pair wouldn't make it to the semi-finals.
[ Recap: Did You Miss Last Week's Dancing With The Stars!? ]
It came down to a bottom two consisting of Lea and Artem and Sadie and Mark.
And the duo that got eliminated was…
Lea and Artem!
We're a little surprised that Sadie didn't get eliminated, but we do think it was time for Lea to go home.
Lea started off as a shoe-in for final three, but we think she really faltered as the season went on.
Make sure to tune in next Monday to see if your favorite makes it all the way to the finals!!!
