It's no surprise that The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 1 was the biggest hit of the weekend, but wow!
With no other new releases to compete with, it was the biggest opening weekend of the entire year!
Jennifer Lawrence and her dour band of rebels brought in an incredible $123 million, dwarfing the rest of the films currently in theaters and topping 2014's other biggest hits Transformers ($100m), Captain America ($95m), and Guardians Of The Galaxy ($94m).

But believe it or not, the numbers were actually a bit disappointing.
See, the two previous films both opened to weekends of over $150 mil, securing their places in the top ten openings of all time!
Why the dropoff?
Maybe it was lack of repeat business. The disappointing cliffhanger ending doesn't exactly drive people to drag their friends out to see it the next day.
Or maybe it's just the film itself. You can't say marketing didn't do its job. The movie looks like kind of a downer, and it kind of is! That doesn't mean it isn't good, though!
Maybe people just weren't rushing out to see it that the way they were for Catching Fire.
