In some sad rock'n'roll news, the Rolling Stones saxophonist Bobby Keys has passed away in his Franklin, Tennessee home at 70 years old on Tuesday.

The rocker is most well-known for his iconic solo on the band's hit Brown Sugar.

A keyboardist who played with Keys, Michael Webb, explained that the sax player had been battling a lengthy illness, but had toured with the band this year before his health was too poor to continue on.

The Stones released a statement, saying:

"The Rolling Stones are devastated by the loss of their very dear friend and legendary saxophone player, Bobby Keys. Bobby made a unique musical contribution to the band since the 1960s. He will be greatly missed."

The Texan had the same birthday as bandmate Keith Richards, who called Keys his ‘soulmate.' Richards gave his own statement, saying:

"I have lost the largest pal in the world, and I can't express the sense of sadness I feel, although Bobby would tell me to cheer up."

Keys also played on John Lennon's Whatever Gets You Through the Night, and in the 1950's he played with Buddy Holly and the Crickets.

Now, he'll get to play forever at the big concert hall in the sky.
