This is unimaginably tragic.
The team did release a statement on the matter, though (below):
Well, turns out that was more than geek gossip!
The Sony hackers have released details of the secret talks between the two studios in their attempts to merge their superhero movie universes!
In leaked emails, Sony Pictures president Doug Belgrad tells motion picture chief Amy Pascal about a potential deal that would see the webslinger partially return to Marvel!
Under the plan Marvel Studios would produce a brand new trilogy (no more Andrew Garfield??) while Sony would retain "creative control, marketing and distribution" of the films.
Unfortunately, those plans obviously fell through, hence no Spidey reveal in Marvel's big Phase 3 announcement.
But the exciting rumor now is that the leak may actually have done some good!
Reports are coming out that sharing the profit on new Marvel-made Spider-Man movies may be back on the table as Sony higher-ups scramble to save face after such public humiliation!
Execs are reportedly meeting in January to discuss the future of Spider-Man which includes — and we could NOT make this up — an animated comedy version produced by LEGO Movie directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller.
We guess we'll have to wait and see how Marvel-ously those meetings go!
