We think we're just gonna call a Lyft next time we need a ride…
Anyone who has ever taken an Uber probably knows that the service has a tendency to hike up their prices at peak hours, meaning you'll be paying BIG bucks if you need to get picked up on a busy night — or a night that's being hit with any kind of unusual weather.
Well rides were in understandably high demand in downtown Sydney on Monday due to the horrific hostage crisis that took place earlier this morning, and Uber saw it as a chance to cash in.
That's right. Scared citizens who were looking to flee the scene found themselves being charged a minimum of $82 and four times the regular rate for a ride.
Uber responded to the backlash by saying the "surge pricing" happens automatically to encourage more drivers to pick up passengers, however, this excuse didn't keep people from calling them out for their absurd pricing.
So what did they do to make it all better? Well, they decided to give refunds to everyone who was already charged at higher rates during the hostage situation, and on top of that they offered free rides for anyone else looking to flee the scene.
That's a really nice gesture and all, but if you ask us, the damage is DEFINITELY already done.
Maybe it's time for Uber to rethink this whole, "surge pricing" nonsense.
