Sony Hack Reveals Alex Trebek Almost Quit Jeopardy! Over THIS Kids Week Incident!

It looks like Alex Trebek's game show hosting career was in serious Jeopardy recently — and we had no idea!

According to the latest leaked emails resulting from the Sony hack, the longtime Jeopardy! host had a bit of a standoff with producers over an incident during Kids Week that had a little girl running backstage in tears.

Apparently the contestant ended in the red at -$1400, making her ineligible to compete in Final Jeopardy.

How did Alex break the news? Well, in quite the usual way. He said:

"We have bad news for you, because you're in the negative situation, it means you won't be around for Final Jeopardy, but you'll automatically pick up $1000 for a third place finish."

According to the emails, this sent the poor girl crying backstage.

Many regular viewers may not have viewed Alex's behavior as insensitive — or even noticed — but the contestant's mother was not happy.

She apparently wrote to Sony, saying that Alex should have comforted her afterward:

"If he had taken the time, he would have known, like you do, that my daughter is not a sore loser, and does not become emotional solely over losing a game. She was upset about not being able to completely play the game to the end. I don't think I'll ever forgive him for that."

It didn't seem to us like Alex acted badly.

Apart from what you see on camera, the host is actually legally required to sequester himself from the contestants to avoid any appearance of impropriety, something the contestants are made aware of early on.

Well, Alex didn't think he did anything wrong either.

When producers asked him to come in and retape his comments to the contestant, he fired back with an angry response that seemed to be a building for quite some time! He wrote:

"If you all think I should retape the opening, I will. But I want to say that for 30 years I've defended our show against attacks inside and out. But it doesn't seem to operate both ways. When I'm vilified, corporate (and certainly legal) always seems to say 'don't say anything and it'll blow over,' and I'm not feeling support from the producers, and that disappoints the s**t out of me…

If I'm making mistakes and saying things you don't like, maybe it's time for me to move on. It's not a threat, but I want to let you know how I'm feeling."

Wow! We can't believe he almost left the show over this!

According to the email chain, the dispute between Alex and the producers did eventually blow over.

Do U think Alex was being insensitive? Watch the incident play out for yourself around 17:20 in the video (below):

That kid and her mom are rotten. They need to get over themselves. Surely they knew the rules. You don't get to compete in final jeopardy if you're in the red, no matter who you are. Such poor sports.

He did nothing wrong. Sorry the contestant's feelings were hurt but come on, Mom! If my kid pulled this, I'd comfort her myself, not expect a National Game show host to hold her hand over a game!

He did absolutely nothing wrong. I'm sure the rules of the game were known by all contestants, and if not, that was her responsibility to know how the game worked. Alex did his job well and professionally. That girl needs to grow some thicker skin, which will come with age and experience. Too bad her mother can't see it that way. To point the finger at anyone else because her baby was upset is nonsense. Unfortunately, life is full of disappointments. Get used to it.

sorry, lady, but your kid's behavior defines "sore loser" and you should be ashamed of your whiny ass response! good god. Too bad they couldn't have pulled the $1000 that brat got.

That mom is one of the idiots that thinks everyone should win even if they lose. That kid is going to grow & be very disappointed when she can't grasp the real world.

He did nothing wrong. I think the little girl was just very embarrassed, so she cried. Her mother probably had a lot to do with it because she had high hopes for her. Alex has said this to thousands of people, including kids.

I love Jeopardy although I missed this episode.
Alex was right and the daughter needs to learn how to deal with failure, otherwise I fear she will not do well in college or the workforce. Mom needs to stop being an enabler.

That's how the game is played, and Alex Trebek is a total class act. The mother is responsible for the comforting when a loss happens. Please.

I used to get 'you can't win 'em all, kid, but you can't win at all without trying, so good show'…and WOULD have gotten: 'out of three kids, two are alway going to go home.'

Why would the little girl be crying over Trebek going over the rules? She's crying because she lost, and at her age that's understandable. Take her for a pizza.

In no way did Alex Trebek's behavior come across as insensitive. Is the mother saying that he actually called her daughter a "sore loser"? Or are those her words? The mom reminds me of a helicopter mom. One who is always hovering over their child to make sure they don't experience anything negative in their life. I'm also not saying that the girl shouldn't have cried. That is a normal reaction. The behavior and reaction that is not normal is the mother's. The mother should have used the moment as a teachable lesson for her daughter. Not everyone can be the winner.

Re: Tori Coop – What did the kid do wrong? She was upset that she lost and embarrassed herself by finishing in the negative, and cried backstage. "Storming off" is just Perez Hilton bullshit, the contestants that don't make it to the 3rd round are never present, so there's no reason to believe she did anything other than leave the stage calmly. The mom, yes, is fucking crazy and should be flogged. Lay off the girl though.

Hackers did not release this info–YOU and other so called journalists released it. The hackers only stole it. Have some decency and keep private info private or maybe next time someone will publish YOUR private info.

Finally real news! These are private conversations being used for revenue. Those who are publishing them do not care about our first amendment right nor do they have any intention of spreading useful/important information. Their allegiance is held only to the all mighty dollar. This leaked information would have gained zero traction without the media's help. We are unwittingly executing the will of a very evil man.
