Under the ocean, WAY down in the sea a new fish species was discovered that is now believed to be the deepest living fish ever seen!
The believed-to-be a type of snailfish has been described as a "ghostly never-before-seen fish with wing-like fins" and it was found on a recent expedition in the Mariana Trench part of the Pacific Ocean!
It was videotaped at its extremely deep depth of 26,722 feet by Jeff Drazen and Patty Fryer of the University of Hawaii.
And the footage is absolutely breathtaking!

Here's how team member Alan Jamieson described it:
"We think it is a snailfish, but it's so weird-looking; it's up in the air in terms of what it is…It is unbelievably fragile, and when it swims, it looks like it has wet tissue paper floating behind it. And it has a weird snout — it looks like a cartoon dog snout."
The most impressive part of this discovery is that the fish could even survive so deep in the ocean. If it was any lower… well, the thinking is it would NOT live. It was at the absolutely limit that a species can handle!
As one article pointed out:
"Handling the intense pressure of the deep sea is a challenge for most animals because it impedes muscles and nerves and bends proteins out of shape, disrupting the working of enzymes required for life."
Well, somehow this strange creature was able to live life in the DEEP blue sea, and now it's being hailed for its surviving accolades.
It sure is a wonderful natural wonder!
