British Couple Accidentally Has Baby Prematurely While Vacationing In NYC… Now They're Stuck With A $200,000 Hospital Bill!!

This is so ridiculous.

A British couple, Katie Amos and Lee Johnston, were on a 5-day vacation in New York City when the unexpected happened:

Their baby Dax decided he wanted to be an American citizen… so he popped out 11 weeks early!!

[ Related: Chris Pratt's Premature Baby Changed His Life! ]

The problem is now baby Dax's parents are stuck in NYC, unable to pay their bill!

They've started a fundraising page for their medical bills and wrote a very cute, very Britishy description that read:

"Hi, my name is Dax Johnston. My Mummy and Daddy went on a 5 day break to New York as a last get away before I came along! They went to a cake shop (Mummy loves cakes), and were walking through Central Park on a movie tour and I decided they were having such a good time I wanted to see what all the fun was about, and I decided to pop out 11 weeks early!!!!! Oooops! Maybe it wasn't a good idea as now we are not aloud to leave the hospital until March the 10th!!!!! We need your help as Mummy and Daddy have no money, no clothes, no friends or family or a familiar face to just say hello to! I know they are scared, but they have some good friends back home that are working very hard to help me! I have already appeared in 3 News Papers! Even the Daily Mirror! We are not sure if Mummy and Daddy's Travel Insurance is going to cover our costs so they are very worried as the bill is looking at being over $200,000 which is £130,000!!! Yikes! No matter how small a donation you can make it will be greatly appreciated. Thankyou xxx"

They're still pretty far away from their goal so any donation would help them out!

Wanna help out a cute lil' preemie baby?

Then go HERE and donate away!!

Idiots. Hard working tax paying AMERICAN CITIZENS are stuck with huge hospital bills and No way to pay, nearly everyday in this country. These dipshits should've thought about that before they decided to get on a plane in her third trimester, which is a huge no -No as it's known to cause premature labor. That picture is disturbing, and that "mini essay" is the dumbest thing I've seen all day.I hope nobody is dumb enough to get swindled by this white trash couple. Kid probably won't live anyway.. if it's lucky

This is racism against white people. ANyway, this just happened to a Canadian couple that went to Hawaii. They got billed to the tune of a million.

    Re: kristen

You do realise the cost is only extortionate because they're not from the US

ie. it wouldn't be 200k for a US citizen with whatever kind of health plan you dudes do over there

200k is a completely inflated price and occurs anywhere and everywhere when you are abroad and incur unexpected medical treatment. I wouldn't be surprised if their insurance didn't cover this, but being pregnant and all you would have assumed they would at least check/get insurance that covered anything/everything that could have happened

Did they not think to get travel insurance that would have provided medical insurance? I don't feel sorry for them at all.

Welcome to the American health care system baby Dax. It's not like they're held hostage here till they pay the bill for petes sake. Go home and work it out.

Re: kristen – Sorry, but just how uneducated are you? Although I agree that they should've looked into this before going on holiday, she wasn't in her third trimester and Americans do not have to pay that amount of money. Otherwise you people must all be extremely rich as the US is one of the few western countries where it's still completely normal to have a lot of kids, especially in the lower class and the Bible Belt.

  14. 14

It's not fundraising, it's begging for money. There are thousands of US citizens that have medical bill debt totaling thousands upon thousands of dollars. Who do they think that they are begging for money here? Go back to your country and beg for money there.

Don't we have a treaty with England that would cover the bill for each other citizens while traveling within each others country? My sister got sick in the UK while on vacation in the 70's and the Brits fixed her up for free.

Look at that it turns out insurance will be paying the bill. The money they are now raising will be spent this way:
"1- loss of income. Lee gets no benefits as Self Employed. Katie Basic maternity pay.
2- House to pay for and all bills
    3- Accomodation in New York
    4- Living costs in USA
Any money left over will be donated to the Ronald Macdonald Fund"

Ok thats cool I guess they are basically using the money for this.
Finally I have a moment to update the page! I would first like to thank all the kind people that have shared and donated for the fundraising. It is also amazing to read and respond to all the well wishers and those that have similar stories! Yesterday we got some amazing news that all medical bills will be covered by the Insurance Company Allianz! Lee and Katie will still be faced with some large costs, from having to pay bills back in the UK to leading a life over in the States. Your donations will go a huge way to cover these but at this point it is impossible to say how much it will cost. They will find out on Monday or Tuesday have to pay for their accomodation in the Ronald Macdonald Foundation also.

Re: Mad – As an American living in the UK, I can confirm that there is no such treaty. The UK has a national health care system, and they are not very thorough about ensuring that everyone they treat actually is entitled to free health care. Your family member should have paid for their care. All Americans traveling abroad should always be covered by travel insurance.

Umm, so! I had friends that had premature twins over the summer, their bill is way higher than that. That is something you risk while traveling pregnant. I am pregnant right now, no way I will be traveling far any time soon!

guys..they have insurance. now they updated their page sayig they will use the money for other reasons than what they have posted originally..

In a update this gentleman stated that he would have to refund Ronald McDonald House for staying there. It is my understanding that this is free to the people who need to stay near the hospital for their child while they are in the hospital! This sounds VERY much like it could be them trying to get a lot more money than they need!!!

Omg the comments here are so rude! They are along the same lines as the comments to the article about the Canadian couple who gave birth prematurely in Hawaii. As a foreigner who has FREE HEALTH CARE, I can say that no, these people can’t afford it, because if the Canadians (and the British as well, but I’m Canadian so I can only speak for them) were to have had their children on-time in their native countries they would be paying nothing – or very little – in hospital fees. These couples did NOT plan to have their children in America, it just happed. Stop being assholes and give these couples a break. Clearly their doctors gave them the OK, because nothing was expected to happen. But I’ve learned my lesson, I’m NEVER going to the give birth in the States, let alone be pregnant there.
