Sam Smith agreed to give up a cut of his songwriting royalties on Stay With Me after classic rock star Tom Petty pointed out similarities to his own song I Won't Back Down.
But the gracious decision was not without some controversy!

While many believe the songs' choruses sound strikingly similar, others are having trouble hearing it at all!
That leaves those fans wondering what kind of legal ramifications this could have on other songs with marginally matching melodies.
Well, apparently the answer is none at all.
See, this wasn't even a legal matter. And according to Tom, it was never going to be!
The Learning To Fly singer released a statement to clear the air on the euphonic faux pas. He said:
"About the Sam Smith thing. Let me say I have never had any hard feelings toward Sam. All my years of songwriting have shown me these things can happen. Most times you catch it before it gets out the studio door but in this case it got by. Sam's people were very understanding of our predicament and we easily came to an agreement. The word lawsuit was never even said and was never my intention. And no more was to be said about it. How it got out to the press is beyond Sam or myself. Sam did the right thing and I have thought no more about this. A musical accident no more no less. In these times we live in this is hardly news. I wish Sam all the best for his ongoing career. Peace and love to all."
Well, we're glad everything was so easily arranged.
We're still not hearing that much similarity — even when you speed up the song and change the pitch — but we aren't the musical geniuses that Sam and Tom are.
