Carnegie Mellon Accidentally Sends Acceptance Emails To 800 Grad Student Applicants Who Didn't Actually Get In!

Awfulness!

800 recent grad student applicants for Carnegie Mellon's esteemed Computer Science program recently had their emotions toyed with due to the "technology glitch" that sent out a mass email which wasn't meant for them!

You'd think a grad school with 'computer science' could avoid that…

Anyway, recent tips from some of the applicants revealed what happened this past Monday as a lot of folks were emailed the following message:

"Congratulations on your acceptance into the Master of Science program in Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon. You are one of the select few, less than 9% of the more than 1200 applicants, that we are inviting. We're convinced this is the right place for you. Welcome to Carnegie Mellon!"

However, hours later some unlucky applicants then received THIS email which said:

"Earlier this morning, we mistakenly sent you an offer of admission to Carnegie Mellon's MS in CS program. This was an error on our part. While we certainly appreciate your interest in our program, we regret that we are unable to offer you admission this year. We received a large number of applications this year from well-qualified applicants and we had many difficult decisions to make. Thanks you very much for your interest in Carnegie Mellon's MS in CS program. You are certainly free to reapply in the future, at which time your application will again receive full consideration. Again, we are sorry for our miscommunication earlier today and we apologize for any confusion or inconvenience this has caused. PS: Please acknowledge receipt of this retraction."

Wow! That really sucks!

The admissions office which handled and subsequently fumbled the honor of revealing who was accepted and who wasn't admitted did eventually address their HUGE mistake in a official statement where they apologized for everything all over again.

Although we're not sure they can apologize enough at this point!

Here's what university spokesperson Ken Walters said:

"We understand the disappointment created by this mistake, and deeply apologize to the applicants for this miscommunication. We are currently reviewing our notification process to help ensure this does not happen in the future."

Way to lift these applicants' spirits and then deliver a crushing blow on that very same day!

Maybe they could add a couple more applicants just to make this up to a select few — although no matter what there will still be A LOT of people feeling indignant for being left out in the cold. Especially after the first email sent in error.

And we don't blame them!
