Ooooh, this is gonna make Donald Trump so angry... which means it's a good thing!!
And boy, are they ever!!
Stellenbosch University and Tygerberg Hospital recently had a big successful operation happen!
Surgeons at the Cape Town school and hospital in South Africa performed a nine hour operation for a penis transplant on a 21-year-old man who lost his penis to amputation after having it circumcised.
Thus making these surgeons the first team ever to perform a successful penis transplant!
One of those surgeons Professor Andre van der Merwe was VERY happy with the results. The Professor said:
"We are very surprised by his rapid recovery. It's a massive breakthrough. We've proved that it can be done - we can give someone an organ that is just as good as the one that he had. There is a greater need in South Africa for this type of procedure than elsewhere in the world, as many young men lose their penises every year due to complications from traditional circumcision."
Although this is the first successful penis transplant, the procedure has been tried before but never with the long term success that this procedure provided.
The Prof also said:
"This is a very serious situation. For a young man of 18 or 19 years, the loss of his penis can be deeply traumatic. He doesn't necessarily have the psychological capability to process this. There are even reports of suicide among these young men. The heroes in all of this for me are the donor, and his family. They saved the lives of many people because they donated the heart, lungs, kidneys, liver, skin, corneas, and then the penis."
The surgery took five years to plan and it seems all of that time was VERY worthwhile — especially for the young man who came away with a brand new penis after this operation!
Although this procedure won't be available to the masses anytime soon, in the future this could lead to men receiving new penises who have lost theirs from penile cancer or even for men with severe erectile dysfunction problems.
Which all bodes well for the future!
Congratulations to everyone who had a hand in this first successful penis transplant and a big congratulations to the man who can live his life now with a brand new penis!
