There was a time when Disney dropping the ball meant that it was time for the next word in a sing-a-long!
With strong heroines like in Merida from Brave and Elsa & Anna of 2013's smash Frozen, Disney is stepping out of the old paradigms of princesses as damsels in distress. But it seems when it comes to Marvel, they have trouble knowing what girls want these days.
With Avengers: Age Of Ultron coming soon, shelves around the world are buckling under the weight of film tie-in merchandise. And yet across the board, it's tough to find merchandise relating to Black Widow!
Sadly, Disney itself seems to be the worst offender. They released their list of new Avengers merchandise on Monday, and apart from a repackaged Infinity video game figurine and a group appearance on ONE t-shirt and ONE tote bag, there's NO Black Widow at all!
Among the countless Hulk, Captain America, and Thor action figures, keychains, t-shirts, etc. there are only TWO appearances? WTF??
Scarlett Johansson is one of the biggest movie stars in the world! Why aren't we seeing more of her??
Of course, there is some Widow-themed merchandise to be had if you look around. For example, Hot Topic's recently announced line of Avengers-inspired Her Universe looks is brilliant.
But what about the little girls who are excited about superheroes? The ones that love watching Black Widow and Scarlet Witch and Gamora kick bad guy butt — where are their toys??
The argument in these cases is always that little girls don't want action figures. But it's that kind of thinking that keeps the cycle going!
Of COURSE little girls aren't going to want action figures if they're three kinds of each male hero, including Stealth Suit Hulk, Winter Assault Iron Man, and Scuba Thor but not ONE Black Widow?!
Little girls don't think ScarJo is awesome and why wouldn't little boys want Black Widow on their shirts??
Come on, Disney!
