Sometimes a diss is just a misunderstanding.
On Wednesday, Joan Rivers' daughter Melissa Rivers went on Howard Stern's radio show, claiming that she was snubbed by Jay Leno after her mother's death.
Joan was famous banned from NBC's The Tonight Show by Jay's predecessor, Johnny Carson, after she launched a rival show on FOX. During Jay's 20+ year late night run, Joan was never invited (though Jimmy Fallon eventually ask her back).
Melissa says she was dissed by Jay at event just months after Joan's death:
"My mother passed in September, and I was asked to speak at The Hollywood Reporter Women in Entertainment breakfast at the beginning of December, so it was very fresh … I walk in, and I'm standing, having a coffee in the reception area, and Jay…looks right at me, and looks away."
Melissa thought he would approach her and offer his condolences:
"It would have been closure, and it would have been the right thing to do."
In an EXCLUSIVE statement to PerezHilton.com, Jay's rep says it was all a misunderstanding:
"If he made eye contact with her, he didn't recognize it was Melissa. Had he done so, he would've come over to extend his condolences. He apologizes if she was offended, but he did not realize it was Melissa."
