You go girl!
However, the TV host wanted to chat about something a little more serious — she asked the funny lady about her experience with body shamers.
The Oscar nominee recalled an awkward face-to-face meeting with a particularly harsh critic during the 2014 Toronto Film Festival — which she previously discussed in her recent Entertainment Weekly cover story.
The critic apparently made incredibly sexist comments about the Emmy winner's appearance in a previous film — so the TV star decided it was time to educate the journalist about body shaming!
"I said, 'You know, would you do that to a man? John C. Riley played a really broken down character and looked terrible.'
I said, 'I put a lot of time and effort into having her completely not look like she cared about herself. That was part of how I felt she felt on the inside. Would you ever say that to a man?' And he goes, 'Well, you really looked bad.' And then I said, 'I hope…do you have children? And he said, 'I do.' And I said, 'I hope you don't have a daughter."
Whoa! However, the Bridesmaids actress explained that she wasn't trying to be malicious.
"When I said, 'If she comes home and someone says you can't have a job because you're unattractive,' are you gonna say, 'That's right?'
And he took that in his heart and he was like, 'No, I would never want that to happen. I would never in a million years want that to happen.'"
FIERCE!! Way to represent women everywhere, Melissa!
"And I said, 'Just know that every time you write stuff, every young girl in this country reads that and they just get a little bit chipped away.' I just think that we tear down women in this country for all these superficial reasons, and women are so great and strong, and I think he really heard that."
The Mike and Molly celebrity went onto explain that this is an all too common problem in the media.
Nonetheless, we're not shocked that this issue is near and dear to Mel's heart — as she'll be launching a clothing line in August that is dedicated to making fashionable plus-size ensembles! LOVES it!
Ch-ch-check out what else the star had to say in her touching interview (below)!
