The man best known for Friday Night Lights and related sportswriting, Buzz Bissinger, in some ways might have seemed an odd choice to spend months with Caitlyn Jenner in anticipation of her reveal in Vanity Fair.
But Bissinger himself has an interesting history with gender identity — and one he alludes to in the piece on Caitlyn!

Writing about mistakenly referring to Caitlyn as "he," "dude," and "Bruce" during their time together, Bissinger notes:
"My miscues have nothing to do with intolerance — I have been a cross-dresser with a big-time fetish for women's leather and an open critic of the often arbitrary delineation between men's and women's clothing — but because it is a strange story regardless of all the important inroads that have been made by transgender men and women into the cultural mainstream."
Bissinger doesn't spend any more time in the piece harping on himself — nor should he — but you know what? It's actually awesome to see a writer with a similar background able to share the story of a transition like Caitlyn's.
The empathy and openness in the piece is a groundbreaking moment in transgender history, and Bissinger might just have been the perfect person at the perfect time to tell this important story!
