Van Patten's publicist Jeff Ballard spoke highly of the late star:
"He was the kindest man you could ever meet in life. They don't make them like him anymore."
Van Patten, who was born in New York City, made his theater debut on Broadway as a seven-year-old before moving to Hollywood and working the rest of his life as an actor.
Van Patten is survived by three sons and his wife, Pat. Our thoughts are with his family.
