Goose may be gone, but Maverick's still got the need for speed!
That's right! It looks like there's still life for a Top Gun sequel after all! The last serious talk about sequel to the Tom Cruise '80s classic was back in 2012 when the director of the original, Tony Scott, was out doing location scouting for the film This was of course right before Scott took his own life.
Since then, there hasn't been a whole lot of rumblings regarding where the project might stand — until now!
David Ellison, a Co-producer and the Skydance CEO said at a press junket for one of his latest movies, Terminator Genisys, that:
"Justin Marks is writing the screenplay right now. He has a phenomenal take to really update that world for what fighter pilots in the Navy has turned into today."
He even talked about the possibility of Cruise's Maverick returning for the sequel by saying:
"There is an amazing role for Maverick in the movie and there is no Top Gun without Maverick, and it is going to be Maverick playing Maverick. It is I don't think what people are going to expect, and we are very, very hopeful that we get to make the movie very soon. But like all things, it all comes down to the script, and Justin is writing as we speak."
We don't know about you, but this couldn't be more exciting news! Sure Top Gun's a classic, but if Hollywood is rebooting ‘80s movies left and right, why not give Maverick a fair shake! We know we'd have NO problem with a volleyball rematch!
