From Little House to the White House??

Ok, maybe not that far, but Little House On The Prairie star Melissa Gilbert IS running for Congress!

Gilbert, who was a child actress on Little House just a few short decades ago, is running as a Democrat in Michigan's 8th District, hoping to unseat Republican Representative Mike Bishop.

On her campaign website, Gilbert made a statement about her decision to run:

"I'm running for Congress to make life a little easier for all the families who feel they have fallen through the cracks in today's economy. I believe building a new economy is a team effort, and we need to bring fresh voices to the table to get the job done."

Bishop's campaign must see Melissa as a threat, because they also aren't holding back!

Gilbert is in trouble with the IRS — she owes more than $300,000 in back taxes — and Bishop's campaign spokesman Stu Sandler was quick to point that out:

"Melissa Gilbert can afford to have a stylist and a Louis Vuitton collar for her dog, but cannot pay her taxes. Her Hollywood values are out of whack with the district."

Considering she's worked sparingly as an actress in the last few years, Gilbert may not have those insider "Hollywood values," but her tax record may really hurt her credibility.

Either way, it'll all come down to the votes. And considering Bishop won his last election with 54% of his district's support, Gilbert may have her work cut out for her!
