While it's rare for deputies to shoot from a helicopter, San Bernardino County sheriff's deputies are trained in doing so. Deputy Olivia Bozek explained that opening fire was necessary because:
"It's a public-safety issue. Once he starts going the wrong way, obviously he doesn't care about passengers or pedestrians or other cars that are around."
After getting hit, the driver jumped out of the vehicle, which crashed head on into a Dodge Durango carrying a family of three. Reports say the family suffered minor injuries and was taken to the hospital.
The robbery suspect continued along the freeway until he collapsed a short distance away, dying at the scene.
We're glad no one else was seriously hurt from this incident.
