This is heartbreaking.
Former NHL star Todd Ewen passed away on Saturday and sadly, police are saying the athlete took his own life. St. Louis Sergeant Brian Schellman shared:
"It appears Mr. Ewen died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound and is being classified as a suicide."
One reporter revealed the 49-year-old struggled with depression. The St. Louis Medical Examiner is in the process of conducting an autopsy, and anticipates the results will be ready within the next few weeks.
During his 11 years in the League, Todd played for St. Louis, Montreal, Anaheim, and San Jose, scored 36 goals, and made 40 assists.
When he was on the Canadian team, they went on to win the Stanley Cup in 1993.
And when he wasn't playing hockey, he was penning children's books. Todd also went on to coach a youth league once he retired from the NHL.
"We are deeply saddened by the passing of former Blue Todd Ewen. Todd was an outstanding individual who called St. Louis home and continued to devote much of his time to the game he loved. On behalf of the entire St. Louis Bluesorganization, our thoughts and prayers are with the Ewen family during this most difficult time."
One of his former teammates, Brett Hull, took to Twitter to post a touching tribute:
Our hearts go out to Todd's wife, children, loved ones, and anyone affected by this terrible tragedy.
