What is it about writing a memoir that makes celebrities want to spill their juiciest secrets? Because we LOVES it!
Earlier this month, Jewel released her own tell-all titled, Never Broken: Songs Are Only Half The Story, which chronicles her life and career — but most importantly, it reveals her romantic relationship with Sean Penn!
It gets better! Their relationship started while he was separated from House of Cards star Robin Wright! AND she says she FELL IN LOVE with him!!!!
The songbird wrote that the whole thing started after her first television appearance on Conan O'Brien's show in 1995.
When she went back home to Alaska, her dad told her that the Milk actor had called for her, but he thought it was a prank. She remembered:
"'No sh*t,' I said, chuckling. 'What did you do?'"
"He had seen me on Conan and was working on a movie he'd written called The Crossing Guard. He wanted me to compose a song for it. I told him I would and he said he would meet me anywhere to screen the movie, I could name the day. I gave him my cell number and figured I would never hear from him again."
Well, she did hear from him again. Quite a bit, actually!
After she wrote the song he wanted, the two continued to talk, and that's when their fledgling fling began. The blonde beauty said:
"We spoke on the phone a lot and he was a fantastic flirt and I did not mind one bit. But I was no fool and knew I was most likely a trifle to him. I intended to give him no such conquest. I put that man through his paces and he took it in stride. He began to court me in earnest, following me around on tour, acting as my de facto roadie."
Jewel said that while Sean was persistently pursuing her, she wanted to take it slow. And then one day the Mystic River star dropped the L-word!
"I liked his mind sober, and had fun playing this way. When I told him this in all seriousness, in a dive bar after a sound check, he responded with a melancholy stare and then canary-eating grin and said it would be impossible not to fall in love with me. I looked at him to see if he was serious. It seemed he was."
Turns out she felt the same way, writing:
"…I enjoyed Sean and would eventually fall in love."
But, their love didn't last and they split that same year. On Monday, the singer discussed the hush-hush relationship with Howard Stern, saying:
"It was hard on me. He really believed in me at a time when nobody else did. And he really made me feel good about myself and I was so desperate for that. Having that go away was hard."
Dying to know more about their secret romance??? Jewel's memoir is on shelves NOW!
