"He was a big influence on me. He took me to my first rock concert. I was 11; he was 23. He was so vibrant, creative, amazing. He shaped my taste in music."
To make matters worse, the School of Rock alum revealed his mother never recovered from losing her son. We can only imagine the pain the Black family went through — especially since Jack described Howard's passing as a slow deterioration.
"We all saw the deterioration. He was only 31. So very young. We were robbed of something precious. It was devastating."
What an intense thing to witness at such a young age. In addition, his parents split up when he was 10-years-old which also had a huge effect on him.
So, it doesn't really surprise us that the 46-year-old reports he went through a bit of a troubled period in his early years. In fact, Jack struggled with drug abuse and even attended a school for problematic youths.
"I remember just lots of turmoil from that time period. I was having a lot of troubles with cocaine. I was hanging out with some pretty rough characters. I was scared to go to school..one of them wanted to kill me. I wanted to get out of there."
However, things seem to have turned around for Tenacious D singer when he enrolled in an arts high school where he met his wife, Tanya Haden. Aww!
Though, Jack's past tragedy may have caused him to be a bit of a helicopter dad.
"Sometimes I think maybe I'm a little bit of a 'helicopter dad' hovering above my kids and making sure that they never are in harm's way. But losing a family member is the worst thing I could imagine."
With so many iconic roles under his belt, just plan ole dad looks to be Jack's favorite part to date. In fact, he even selected his most recent film with his boys, Sam and Thomas, in mind. For the new GB film, the father-of-two stars as the horror franchise's author R.L. Stine!
"My sons are 7 and 9 years old, and they love a little spooky in their movies. It felt like a perfect project, scary and funny - a great combo for me."
We couldn't be prouder of Jack's accomplishments after going through so much. Way to slay!
