A new study was done by the University of Michigan which ultimately found that cheese was the 'drugs of the food world'.

The scientists who conducted the study hypothesized that foods that are heavily processed have very similar properties as drugs associated with abuse.
Dr. Neal Barnard of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine has said that that cheese has a chemical called casein which which ultimately disintegrates during digestions and secretes casomorphins.
Cameron Wells, a registered dietician explained casomorphins by saying:
"[Casomorphins] really play with the dopamine receptors and trigger that addictive element."
So of course it comes as no surprise that the researchers also found that pizza was one of the world's MOST addictive foods — mainly because of the cheesy topping!

Erica Schulte, one of the study's authors said:
"Fat seemed to be equally predictive of problematic eating for everyone, regardless of whether they experience symptoms of 'food addiction.'"
While milk contains a very small amount of casein, a pound of cheese takes about 10 pounds of milk to make — so the chemical is obviously ingested in much higher amounts!
Seeing as how the average person eats about 35 pounds of cheese per year, it's definitely not surprising that it's somewhat addictive!
What do you think? Does this turn you off of wanting more cheese or are you craving some pizza and nachos like we are?!
