Based on evidence from hundreds of studies, the organization's cancer research unit now officially classifies processed meat as "carcinogenic to humans" — linking it specifically to colon (or colorectal) cancer!
According to the report, eating just 50 grams (approximately two slices of ham) of processed meat each day, the risk of colon cancer can increase by 18%!
The organization considers processed meat as "any meat that is salted, cured, or smoked to preserve it or enhance the flavor."
Based on the certainty of its link with cancer, the WHO even went as far as putting processed meat in the same category as smoking and asbestos — but said that it did NOT mean they were equally as dangerous:
But bacon won't go down without a fight! Meat industry groups have — not unexpectedly — blasted the report as biased and misleading!
Shalene McNeill, executive director at the National Cattlemen's Beef Association, said:
"As a registered dietitian and mother, my advice hasn't changed To improve all aspects of your health, eat a balanced diet, which includes lean meats like beef, maintain a healthy weight, be physically active and, please don't smoke."
Wow, this is a shocking revelation!
Are YOU gonna put down the bacon for good, or is this just something to add to the ever growing list of things that cause cancer?
