The girl's mother, Katerra Lewis, is charged with manslaughter after leaving her daughter Kelci in the care of several children at around 11 p.m. on October 10 while she and a friend went out for the night — none of the children were over the age of 8.
The 8-year-old boy is currently in the custody of the Alabama State Department of Human Resources and is being charged with murder.
Lt. Sean Edwards said the Birmingham Police Department has never charged someone so young with murder before.
Lewis and her friend left at least five children alone. When they returned around 2 a.m., they didn't check on the children. Hours later, she found Kelci unresponsive in her crib and called authorities.
Edwards shamed the negligent mother at a news conference on Tuesday, saying:
"The sad part is you had an adult mother here who had the audacity to leave her 1-year-old in the custody of several other children at the house and none of those kids were over the age of 8. I think her punishment is going to be something she'll have to live with the rest of her life, her actions that night, choosing the club over taking care of her 1-year-old."
We agree, this tragedy could have been completely avoided if Lewis hired someone of responsible age to watch her children.
Our hearts go out to Kelci's family at this trying time…
What do YOU think? Can an 8-year-old possibly held to the same standard as an adult — even when it comes to such a heinous crime??
According to reports out Sunday morning, Angelina Jolie's political ambitions with the United Nations may have caused a rift between her and Brad Pitt, at least based on a source "close to the couple."
TMZ is reporting that Jolie's dream had been to become a top official with the UN -- which makes sense, considering all the charity work and traveling to developing nations that she does -- but that didn't fly at home with Brad.
