This is a medical miracle — or depending on your perspective, a real burden!
A woman in upstate New York saw her DUI charge dismissed this week after she went in front of a judge and argued she suffers from "auto-brewery syndrome," a condition where the human body literally ferments alcohol within the stomach!
The woman, who police nabbed driving "all over the road," with "glassy-bloodshot eyes and slurred speech," blew a .40 on an alcohol test (!!!), but once she got to the hospital, medical professionals were adamant about releasing her immediately after she didn't exhibit any symptoms of drunkenness!
Then, when she went before a judge, she actually got the charge dismissed on account of her VERY rare syndrome!
Her attorney, Joseph Marusak, told reporters more about the syndrome:
"She can register a blood alcohol content that would have you or I falling down drunk, but she can function. I had never heard of auto-brewery syndrome before this case. But I knew something was amiss when the hospital police took the woman to wanted to release her immediately because she wasn't exhibiting any symptoms.
Barbara Cordell, the dean of nursing at Panola College said more about the syndrome, too:
"They can function at alcohol levels such as 0.30 and 0.40 when the average person would be comatose or dying. Part of the mystery of this syndrome is how they can have these extremely high levels and still be walking around and talking."
