On Wednesday, the Trumbo actress addressed the controversy with England's Channel 4 News, and came to the defense of the Academy!
"I don't think it's the Oscars, I think it's unfair to attack the Academy. It just so happened it went that way."
The 70-year-old explained how Idris Elba should have been nominated for Beasts of No Nation, but "not enough people saw – or wanted to see – a film about child soldiers."
But being the Dame that she is, Mirren clarified her comments, adding:
"I'm saying that the issue we need to be looking at is what happens before the film gets to the Oscars. What kind of films are made, and the way in which they're cast, and the scripts…So it's those things that are much more influential ultimately than who stands there with an Oscar."
Mirren was also asked about her thoughts on what would happen if Donald Trump became president, to which she had a much harsher response:
"I can't imagine how the world would look. I think it's a very frightening idea myself. And this whole idea of ‘making America great,' it seems to me that it would actually sort of be the end of America as a great country."
We have a feeling that's the mentality of most people across the pond! LOLz!
