Stephen King fans have been blessed (and cursed) with dozens of film adaptations of his work over the years.
But after many attempts, the author's long-running book series The Dark Tower will finally see life on the big screen!
The eight novel sci-fi/fantasy series, which King regards as one of his magnum opus, follows a gunslinger on his quest to find a fabled Dark Tower — but things get WAY complicated, as he meets many of King's other characters from different worlds along the way.

And it looks like this film already boasts quite the cast — Idris Elba has finally been confirmed to be playing the hero Gunslinger and Matthew McConaughey is playing the mysterious Man in Black!
King admitted he is "a little bit surprised" that the film is finally in production, as the first novel in the series was published way back in 1982! Speaking to EW, he said:
"The thing is, it's been a looong trip from the books to the film. When you think about it, I started these stories as a senior in college, sitting in a little sh*tty cabin beside the river in Maine, and finally this thing is actually in pre-production now. I'm delighted, and I'm a little bit surprised."
The writer confessed that the first film will NOT adapt the plot of the first book, but said that a lot of it takes place "in the modern world," adding:
"[The movie] starts in media res, in the middle of the story instead of at the beginning, which may upset some of the fans a little bit, but they'll get behind it, because it is the story."
Production is expected to start shooting in South Africa in seven weeks and is set to hit theaters on January 13, 2017!
