This is unimaginably tragic.
The team did release a statement on the matter, though (below):
As evidenced by 21 Jump Street and Tusk, Johnny Depp LOVES making surprise cameos!
And though ALL of the actor wasn't in last night's episode of The Walking Dead, his famous face did appear on screen — in the form of a decapitated head!
In Sunday's episode, Andy, Jesus, and Rick try to trick Negan's Saviors into thinking they've killed Gregory, so they gather the heads of three decapitated walkers to see which looks the most like the Hilltop leader.
The episode's director Greg Nicotero's own noggin was used as a cast for head number two (which got pummeled by Rick to better resemble Gregory's broken nose) — and he explained how fans might recognize head number three:
"One of the other heads, I don't know if I'm going to get in trouble if I say this, was Johnny Depp. I think we had sculpted an emaciated version of a dummy head for something and we used Johnny Depp's head as a basis just for a clay sculpt. I can't remember who the third one is, but I'm in good company. Norman kept saying he wanted the heads when we were done shooting. I said we've got to wait until the picture is logged."
We're not sure if Depp is fan of the AMC horror series, but we have a feeling he'd weirdly enjoy seeing his surprise cameo!
And probably even Norman Reedus keeping it on his mantle!
