So much that the creator of the HBO dramedy series shared an image from the episode on Instagram in honor of her costar's performance.
But some fans were upset because the snap also contained a major spoiler!
The character disappeared between seasons two and three when Christopher Abbott decided to leave the show because of "creative differences" with Dunham.
After the Marnie-centric episode aired on the West Coast, Lena took to IG to praise the performance of Williams — but also spoiled the long-awaited return of Charlie for a lot of fans who had still yet to see the episode, posting:
Been waiting for months to show you all @aw's stunning work in tonight's episode. One of the great privileges of my life has been watching Allison grow and stretch as an artist over the past five and a half years. She has given every ounce of herself to this character, operated with complete trust and vulnerability and taught me so much in the process- about Marnie and about myself. Thank you so much for taking the (literal) dive, Al. You are, quite simply, my sister.A photo posted by Lena Dunham (@lenadunham) on Mar 27, 2016 at 10:32pm PDT
After getting some heat from fans, the 29-year-old apologized to those who were spoiled by the major character return — but made it a point to remind viewers that they don't watch Girls "for the shocking twists."
I'm sorry to anyone I upset with a spoiler image. We'd already aired on both coasts and after that you can't keep the cat in the bag! AND I've been holding onto this secret for almost a whole damn year! Can you blame a girl for being excited? Plus this is Girls not Lost lol 😍 You don't tune in for the shocking twists. That being said, when you watch you may yet be surprised. Meanwhile thank you to Twitter user Danielle Petrosa for this amazing Marnie/Charlie & Pacino/Winn compare and contrast. I can peacefully retire.A photo posted by Lena Dunham (@lenadunham) on Mar 27, 2016 at 11:20pm PDT
In the episode, Marnie ran into her former flame after having a spat with her husband Desi. She almost didn't recognize Charlie, whose voice and face was a little different — but after the two caught up, it was like no time passed at all!
Charlie then took Marnie on a random adventure that included rich people parties, being mistaken for a hooker, getting mugged, and — of course — some sex.
A series of events which led Marnie to the conclusion that she was kind of over being married…
At the end of the episode, Marnie told her husband Desi that she didn't want to be married to him anymore. They broke it off, and Marnie packed up her things before heading over to Hannah's and climbing into bed with her bestie.
Are YOU surprised by what happened in the latest episode of Girls?
