On Monday, Rodrigo Duterte — the mayor of southern Davao city — is expected to win the Philippines national election.
As indicated by an unofficial vote count, the politician received more than 14.4 million votes. Former Interior Secretary Manuel Roxas comes in second place with 8.6 million votes.
According to William Yu of the Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting:
"We can call it now because the gap got so big relative to the maximum the No. 2 can get."
While the results are not technically official, the group is accredited by the Commission on Elections to conduct a "quick count." Final results are expected Tuesday.
Duterte — who has been dubbed the "Donald Trump of the East" — has run an extremely controversial campaign. As we reported, the 71-year-old made headlines when he made a rape joke about Australian lay minister Jacqueline Hamill at a rally.
He has also been accused of making homophobic and violent remarks — including the promotion of death squads. He has become so infamous, John Oliver did a piece on him for Last Week Tonight.
