The NBA player was fatally shot after he broke down the door to an apartment in the Dallas area, and the person living in the apartment fired his gun in self-defense to protect himself from the threat.
Dejean-Jones, 23, was from Los Angeles, and police did not know why he was in Dallas.
The athlete was found outside in an outdoor passageway at the apartment building by police officers, and first responders began treatment but it was too late, and Dejean-Jones bled to death.
The New Orleans Pelicans released a statement on the death:
"We are devastated at the loss of this young man's life (and) who had such a promising future ahead of him."
Steve Prohm, who coached Dejean-Jones at Iowa State University in college, said:
"This is a very, very sad and tragic day for everyone that's a part of the Cyclone basketball family… [He was] a passionate and talented player that lived out his dream of playing in the NBA through hard work and perseverance."
