This may shed some light on the tragic accident surrounding Anton Yelchin's death.
As we previously reported, the Star Trek star was killed in a freak accident when his Jeep Grand Cherokee was left in neutral, rolled down his steep driveway in Studio City, CA, and fatally pinned him against his brick mailbox. So sad!

However, many are now speculating this unfortunate incident was caused due to a flaw in the designe of the vehicle itself. Reportedly, thousands of Jeep Grand Cherokees were part of a voluntary recall after the design of the gear stick caused countless drivers to unintentionally leave their cars in neutral.
Specifically, the 2015 version of the Jeep was recalled due to the e-shift transmission as it lacked the grooves in traditional transmissions where drivers could feel each shift in gear. The recall notice even stated that the Cherokees have "poor tactile and visual feedback to the driver."
Apparently the only indicator that the car wasn't in park was a small light and a chime which would go off when the door was opened.
In other words, Anton may've thought his car was actually in park when he got out. A National Highway Traffic Safety Administration report noted the issue with the shifting mechanism potentially caused 212 crashes, 308 property damage claims, and 41 injuries.
It's said the Jeep's parent company Fiat Chrysler has since reverted to using the old design of gear shifts for the 2016 models. Unfortunately, it has yet to be confirmed if this flaw is to blame for Anton's passing.
