A homeless man in Italy was charged with murder in connection with the death of a U.S. college student who disappeared hours after arriving abroad.

College sophomore Beau Solomon — who had beat childhood cancer — was last seen around 1 a.m. on Friday while at a pub in Rome, having arrived in the city only hours earlier.

The 19-year-old student from the University of Wisconsin-Madison was due to study at the Rome-based liberal arts college John Cabot University.

The finance major's roommate reportedly became "worried when he did not see Beau at orientation" later on Friday.

Shortly after the disappearance, his parents called Beau's credit card company and "realized thousands of dollars had been charged" in Milan to his card — which is about 350 miles north of Rome.

On Monday, Soloman's body was found in the Tiber River, reportedly with a head wound and blood on his shirt.

According to reports, investigators identified the suspect as Massimo Galioto, a 40-year-old homeless man who is being charged with "aggravated murder."

U.S. Ambassador to Italy John Phillips sent his condolences to Solomon's family on Tuesday, issuing the statement:

"I was saddened to learn of the tragic death of Beau Solomon. My heart goes out to his family and friends. The U.S. Embassy stands ready to provide support to Italian authorities investigating his disappearance and death."

Back stateside, the student's friends and family remembered him as "loved by everyone." Cole Solomon remembered his little brother's courage through his battle against cancer, telling ABC News:

"He had over 15 to 20 procedures growing up throughout his life and was able to overcome all that."

Beau's parents arrived in Italy on Monday. Our hearts go out to them, along with all of Solomon's loved ones, at this devastating time.
