The law might have a hold on Stephen Colbert — but it's got nothing on Stephen Colbert!

Last week, The Late Show host dusted off his iconic Comedy Central character from The Colbert Report (who has apparently been living in the woods with Jon Stewart all this time) to talk about Donald Trump and the Republican National Convention.

Though fans were overjoyed to see the Champion of America resurrected, it looks like we'll never see the host of The Colbert Report again.

The real Colbert revealed on Wednesday's The Late Show that Comedy Central's legal team is banning his old character from appearing on CBS! He explained:

"This is true, immediately after that show, CBS' top lawyer was contacted by the top lawyer for another company to say that the character Stephen Colbert is their intellectual property."

But Colbert isn't gonna let the law win that easily!

Little does the cable network know, Stephen Colbert has an identical twin cousin also named Stephen Colbert, who is "totally different" from the former CC anchor!

Not only was the third Colbert introduced live via satellite from Philadelphia in his "first appearance on TV ever," but The Late Show host also introduced a new segment "The Werd" — which bares a striking resemblance to the favorite Colbert Report segment "The Word."

But, again, these are all totally different! Ha!
