A New Mexico woman claims that she has fallen "madly in love" with her 19-year-old biological son, and now, both are facing up to a year and a half in prison if they are found guilty of incest at a trial set to take place later this year.
Monica Mares, a 36-year-old in Clovis, New Mexico, was only 16 years old when she gave birth to a baby boy she immediately put up for adoption.
That baby boy is now 19-year-old Caleb Peterson, and the pair have gotten back into each other's lives after initially getting in touch over social media, and eventually meeting each other for the very first time last Christmas.
Mares, speaking with DailyMail.com, is candid about the first time she met Caleb, saying:
"The first time I met my son in person I was so happy and excited I gave him a big hug. I went to go pick him up at his dad's house in Texas. He gave me a call and asked me to pick him up, I got butterflies in my stomach. I met him outside and I knew it was him when he came towards me. He was crying and he gave me a hug. It was almost love at first sight but first it was mother love. He gave me a mother hug. He came home in the truck and came to live with me and we were both happy as mother and son."
Not far thereafter, though, the couple started developing, um, other feelings towards each other, and just a few weeks later, the relationship became sexual.
"It felt like I met somebody new in my life and I fell in love with him. At first I told him, 'I'm sorry I don't know how you are going to react to this. I'm your mom and you're my son, but I'm falling in love with you.' And he said: 'You know what, I am too. I was scared to let you know.' He was falling in love with his mom and I was falling in love with my son. We talked about it and we took off to the park. I said, 'would you ever date your mom?' And he said, 'would you ever date your son?' And I said, 'Honest truth yes I would.'"
"We were hanging out just talking and I looked at her and she looked at me and I kissed her. It was a real kiss it had feelings behind it, there was a spark that ever since then it just stayed. Honestly I never thought we would get into trouble for our relationship. We were both consenting adults - when it comes down to it. She's adult I'm adult I can make my own decisions. I never thought it would blow up into something like this."
Mares and Peterson are so open about going public with their love because they want to raise awareness for Genetic Sexual Attraction (GSA) relationships which, yes, is exactly what you think.
But there's also a danger to the pair going public!
With the court date coming up, and both facing criminal charges for their actions, there is a court order in place demanding they stay separate and have no contact with each other — so for now they live in the same New Mexico town, but apart from each other.
All this stemmed from a fight Mares and her family had with neighbors one day back in February. Peterson had been living (and… uh… loving) with her in Clovis and when cops arrived at the fight, they learned that the mom-and-son were shacking up.
That's a fourth degree felony in the state of New Mexico, and both were immediately charged, before going to an arraignment in April. Monica and Caleb have broken one no-contact order already this summer, too, and both have been held in custody for a time because of it.
With the trial looming, each could face up to 18 months in state prison on the incest charge… but it doesn't sound like it matters much to them, and Mares even sounded like she's ready for the jail time as long as moving forward, she can be with Peterson:
"He is the love of my life and I don't want to lose him. My kids love him, my whole family does. Nothing can come between us not courts, or jail, nothing. I have to be with him. When I get out of prison I will move out of Clovis to a state that allows us to be together."
Oh yeah — that's another thing. Monica's other kids (she has nine in total) have taken to calling Caleb "dad."
WHAT THE WHAT?!
Unsurprisingly, Mares has been having a ton of trouble with the people of Clovis, who she says have called her "Incest" as a new nickname, but — get this — she wouldn't even give up her love with Caleb for all eight of her other children (which, yes, have been taken away by the state already).
"If I had to choose between my son and all my other kids I'd chose him. Sometimes the easy way isn't the best way. Sometimes we have to make that life decision that's going to change and affect everything but when it comes down to it, it's worth it."
To his credit (discredit?), Caleb sounds equally as loyal with the threat of prison time looming:
"I will wait for her if she gets a jail sentence and I don't. For me it's not about patience it's about commitment. If I'm committed to something I follow it through that's the kind of person I am. If I love her enough and I'm crazy enough to stay in Clovis for her and crazy enough to face all the courts for her then waiting a bit of time to have the rest of my life being happy then I'm willing to do that."
Caleb, what?! WHY?! HOW……????
Maybe more disturbing than anything, though, the couple does have some supporters — including Dayton Chavez, Mares' ex-husband and the father of two of her nine children!
"I've told them I still love you guys either way. I support them. I would like to see the government get out of their business and let them live a normal life - let them live how they want to live. It would be different if it was a domestic violence situation but it's not. My point of view is they need to be allowed to live just how they are that's what America is built on."
What America is built on…
Thomas Jefferson and George Washington are probably rolling around in their graves! Though they're also upset Hamilton is a bigger hit than 1776…
The couple is also being supported by a woman named Christina Shy, who runs an advocacy website for related couples that fall in love. Shy said:
"Our whole community is watching this case and looking for updates. It needs to be brought to the attention of everybody in the country and people need to start thinking differently. It was the same with gay people just a few years ago and now they can get married they are accepted. We are all adults. We are not pedophiles, there's no domestic issue we are in love, we want to be together but we are related. That shouldn't be a deciding factor."
We feel like we need to just wash our brains or something…
