But now that Trump has officially been elected President of the United States, it's clear that this political commentary had an inverse effect on the majority of Americans who ended up voting for the Republican nominee.
Like rebellious teenagers not wanting to listen to their parents' advice about not dating that crazy racist guy in school, Trump supporters ended up backing the candidate with even more fervor after the media's repeatedly unflattering portrayal of the business mogul.
That problem could be summed up in Stephen Colbert's LIVE Election Night Showtime special Democracy's Series Finale: Who's Going To Clean Up This Sh*t? — in which he opened with an animated clip giving Trump a supervillain origin story straight out of the pages of a Batman comic book!

Of course, the fun didn't stop there…
The Late Show host then brought back Laura Benanti to reprise her hilarious Melania Trump impersonation — and staying true to character, she made sure to plagiarize old pop songs and Taco Bell commercial slogans in her interview.
Benanti went on to thank Trump's Republican opponents, her "slightly older sister" Ivanka Trump, and of course "the man whose vision drove our entire campaign, Vladimir Putin."
But the jokes came to a sobering halt at the end of the night when a potential Trump victory turned into a nightmarish reality. After hearing that the GOP nominee was nearing the required 270 electoral votes, Colbert put on a scared and confused face that summed up how half of America feels, uttering:
"I can't put a happy face on that, and that's my job."
The comedian wrapped up his election special on a somber note, acknowledging that too many Americans were drinking up the "poisonous" politics from this exhausting election season. He quipped:
"Seeing this election, people all around the world… everybody's going to be saying, ‘Has America lost its mind?' And the answer is, evidently, ‘Back off buddy, we got 300 million guns, and we're kinda stressed right now.'"
We have a feeling we'll be stressed for the next four years, Stephen…
