Miss Universe Canada Ices Her Body Shamers & Talks Overcoming Beauty Pageant Culture

Another day, another stunning celebrity forced to speak out on body shaming.

Siera Bearchell may have been crowned Miss Universe Canada, but that doesn't mean she's immune to receiving negative comments about her weight online.

Last week, the 23-year-old Saskatchewan law student spoke out about "self-worth and self-love" in an inspiring Instagram post after being told she was "gaining weight."

Noting that she was "not as lean as I was when I was 16, 20, or even last year," Bearchell said she gained a newfound confidence as soon as she stopped trying to fit into the body type society wanted her to have.

In a new interview with the BBC, the beauty queen — who is currently in the Philippines competing for the title of Miss Universe 2016 — explained she wanted other women to know it's okay to be comfortable with their bodies.

Bearchell explained she "caved in" to the pressures of pageant competing last year, enduring a strict workout regimen and a diet of chicken and asparagus to stay slim — and felt absolutely "miserable."

She said:

"I was not happy getting the results I was getting because I was constantly being told there was more I could do, I was never good enough."

Nowadays, the brunette bombshell has eased up on the dieting and has never felt better in her own skin.

In addition to the criticism from online haters, Bearchell says there is also pressure from inside the beauty pageant — like directors asking her to take scale selfies to prove that she was losing weight! WTF?

After being crowned Miss Universe Canada, the pageant winner was told she'd have to give up junk food and be in "the best shape of her life" in order to compete in the worldwide competition. But the Canadian stunner didn't listen, and instead decided to "stick true" to herself!

While beauty pageants have long been blasted for putting too much emphasis on a woman's waist size, Bearchell said that attitude is starting to change.

This is evidenced by this year's Miss Universe pageant being hosted by plus size model Ashley Graham, who Bearchell named as "one of my greatest inspirations for sharing a body positive message and celebrating the beauty of every woman."

We love that these beauty queens are keeping it real! Read Siera's original heartfelt post (below)!

I was recently asked, "What happened to you? Why have you gained weight? You are losing points" This was a reference to my body of course. While I am first to say I am not as lean as I was when I was 16, 20, or even last year, but I am more confident, capable, wise, humble and passionate than ever before. 🙋🏻As soon as I started to love who I was rather than always trying to fit what I thought society wanted me to be, I gained a whole new side of life. This is the side I am trying to bring to the @missuniverse competition. The side of life that is so rare to find: self-worth and self-love. We always focus on the things we wish we could change rather than loving everything we are. #missuniverse #bodydiversity #IMGA photo posted by Siera Bearchell (@sierabearchell) on Jan 17, 2017 at 10:26am PST
