Scientists Move The Doomsday Clock Closer To Midnight Than It's Been In 60 Years — Guess Who We Have To Thank For That…

We've got bigger things to worry about than Groundhog's Day.

Every year, the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists sets a symbolic Doomsday Clock to reflect whether humanity is closer or further from destruction given the events of the previous year.

And since the most powerful man in the world is bent on destroying the environment, expanding our military, and pissing off our neighbors, it's no surprise we're closer to Doomsday than we've been in over half a century.

On Thursday, scientists moved the hands of the clock closer to midnight amid increasing fear over nuclear weapons and climate change under President Donald Trump.

The metaphoric clock — which was created by Manhattan Project scientists in 1947 — is now two-and-a-half minutes from midnight, the closest it's been to the dark hour since 1953 when the hydrogen bomb was first tested.

Experts said the clock was moved closer because of a dealer's choice of threats — from Trump's scary political rhetoric to the "dangerous nuclear situation" blossoming in countries like North Korea, Russia, and China.

Rachel Bronson, the executive director and publisher of Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, said in a statement:

"This year's Clock deliberations felt more urgent than usual…as trusted sources of information came under attack, fake news was on the rise, and words were used by a President-elect of the United States in cavalier and often reckless ways to address the twin threats of nuclear weapons and climate change."

Unsurprisingly, the Bulletin highlighted President Tiny Hands' troubling stances on nuclear weapons and climate change as a "concern."

David Titley of the Bulletin Science and Security Board explained:

"Current political situation in the U.S. is of particular concern. The Trump administration needs to state clearly, unequivocally it accepts climate change caused by human activity… There are no alternative facts here."

Yeah, that's totally not gonna happen.

Last year, the clock stayed at three minutes to midnight — it was adjusted in 2015 after previously standing at five minutes to midnight.

What does Trump think of this Doomsday Clock? We have a feeling the symbolism might be lost on him, you know, since he can't, er, doesn't read and all.
