Donald Trump Claims The U.S. Murder Rate Is 'The Highest It's Been In 47 Years' — Um, NO. It Isn't.

Donald Trump is continuing his campaign of fearmongering by making up fake murders.

Just days after Kellyanne Conway made up a terrorist massacre, the POTUS is spouting off his own alternative facts about the country's murder rate.

In a listening session with county sheriffs from around the U.S. on Tuesday, Drumpf dropped this nugget:

"And yet the murder rate in our country is the highest it's been in 47 years, right? Did you know that? Forty-seven years. I used to use that. I'd say that in a speech, and everybody was surprised. Because the press doesn't tell it like it is."

Yeah, they were probably surprised because it's not true.

According to the FBI's most recent data, the murder rate in 2015 was 4.9 per 100,000 citizens. Forty-five years earlier, in 1970, the murder rate was 7.9 per 100K.

Not only is it less than it was 47 years ago, it's nowhere NEAR the "highest it's been in 47 years."

The numbers ROSE from 1970, hitting a peak of 10.2 in 1980 and hovering between 8 and 10 until the mid '90s when they finally dropped back down.

Here's a chart thanks to FactCheck.org.

BTW, even the TOTAL number of murders was lower in 2015 than in 1970, by about 300 killings, despite a much larger population.

Near as anyone can tell, if Trump isn't just pulling the numbers out of his ass, he MAY have just been confused as to a specific statistic in The New York Times, which reported that the rise from 2014-2015 was the biggest one-year increase in about that many years.

But obviously, that would mean two things:

First, Trump lacks both the 5th grade math education to understand these statistics (we get it, you can only count so high on those little fingers) and also the delegation skills to hire someone who does.

Second, Trump would also be wrong about the "press not telling it like it is" since HE GOT THE DAMN STATISTIC FROM THE NEW YORK TIMES!

The other option of course, is that Trump is just lying to try to keep his base scared.

After all, once he and his team get his supporters to a place where they don't trust the press, he can do anything he damn well pleases, no matter how vile, and to his voters the news of these violations will mean nothing.

Which do you think? Is Trump lying? Or stupid?
