One Disney character is about to come out of the closet!
While many fans of Beauty and the Beast are stoked to see the romantic animated classic come to life, we're excited for the "exclusively gay moment" which has been teased by the flick's director, Bill Condon. Yassssss!
Any guesses about which character is a part of the LGBT community?? HINT: He sings an entire song about how hot another guy is! Yup, Gaston's sidekick LeFou (played by Josh Gad) is gay in the 2017 remake of BATB.
During a chat with Attitude magazine, Mr. Condon revealed:
"LeFou is somebody who on one day wants to be Gaston and on another day wants to kiss Gaston. He's confused about what he wants. It's somebody who's just realizing that he has these feelings. And Josh makes something really subtle and delicious out of it. And that's what has its payoff at the end, which I don't want to give away. But it is a nice, exclusively gay moment in a Disney movie."
We are SO into this! And honestly, we're not surprised to learn about this historical decision since one of the major themes of the original movie is about celebrating the differences in everyone. Emma Watson also noted to the mag:
"I think it was really important for Dan [Stevens] and I to develop and understand why each of our characters feel as if they don't fit in. I certainly felt watching the original that I wanted to know more about why Belle feels that she's different and why she wants to be different and why she's naturally different."
Well said! Be sure to ch-ch-check out Gad's interpretation of LeFou for yourself (below) AND let us know if you'll be catching Beauty and the Beast when it hits theaters on March 17.
