Can you believe there was a time Tom Cruise was afraid to openly practice Scientology?
We mean, maybe he still is. He isn't keeping it secret, but he doesn't exactly jump on couches on daytime TV talking about it either.
But for a few minutes in 2003, the Mission: Impossible star was more angry than scared…

In a book about former Paramount Pictures CEO Sherry Lansing, author Stephen Galloway recounts an incident from 2003 when Lansing had to be the peacekeeper between Cruise and former Paramount president of production John Goldwyn.
Goldwyn was in the midst of a custody battle with his Scientologist wife Colleen Camp. During this time, Goldwyn told the court that he believed Scientology was "being applied to alienate the affection" of his daughter. This admission caused Camp to pass the divorce papers to Scientology leaders, which included Cruise.
Recently speaking with Page Six, Goldwyn remembered how Cruise immediately took offense. He said:
"Tom got very upset because he thought I was launching a campaign against Scientology, and he felt I was persecuting him for his religion. Tom was rabid about it and said, 'It's because of people like you that I have to ride in a bulletproof car and why I cannot practice my faith openly.'"
This is when Lansing stepped in as a mediator. Goldwyn recalled:
"Sherry was amazing as an executive and a friend. She stepped in and saved the situation by saying, 'I've known John for years, and he isn't a bigot. This is about his daughter.' Tom immediately calmed down."
In fact, Cruise later proved instrumental in settling the divorce and custody disagreements. Goldwyn said that when Cruise learned his divorce hadn't been settled yet, he immediately came forth to help resolve matters.

"[Tom said] 'Hold tight' [and] within 24 hours we were done. Tom Cruise was responsible for bringing my divorce to a close. It is a great Hollywood story."
Well, that's pretty damn nice!
As far as Scientology is concerned though, it's not a surprise Cruise keeps it mostly to himself. With Leah Remini recently spearheading the movement to uncover its shady secrets, the organization is not something anyone is bragging about.
