If you're anything like us, you woke up the morning after the election in utter disbelief.

So we can only imagine what was going through Hillary Clinton's mind as she had to concede the victory to arch nemesis Donald Trump.

In the new book Shattered: Inside Hillary Clinton's Doomed Campaign, political journalists Jonathan Allen and Amie Parnes offer a behind-the-scenes look of the politician's campaign and what went down the night it all came to a head.

When the vote came to favor Drumpf over Hillz, the longtime advocate received two phone calls from her former boss, President Barack Obama, where she ultimately apologized for letting him down.

In the first conversation, the 44th POTUS told Clinton it was time to "concede" with "dignity."

The authors wrote:

"After Trump had questioned the legitimacy of the election, the last thing Obama wanted was for Hillary to reinforce that message. As president, it was his job to safeguard the integrity of the political process."

Listening to her boss, the former Secretary of State picked up the phone and said to her opponent:

"Congratulations, Donald."

Uggghhh.

After that was said and done, Obama reached out to Clinton again, during which she apologized, saying simply:

"Mr. President I'm sorry."

The writers added:

"She had let him down. She had let herself down. She had let her party down. And she had let her country down. Obama's legacy and the dreams of her presidency lay shattered at Donald Trump's feet. This was on her."

In the days following the election, the authors said Hillary's sadness turned to anger:

"The Russian stuff has bothered her a lot. She's sort of learning what the administration knew and when they knew it, and she's just sort of quizzical about the whole thing … She struggled with the question of why Obama hadn't done more to apprise the public that the Russians had gone way beyond what had been reported [in influencing the presidential election]. She wondered why the president hadn't leaned harder into making the case that Vladimir Putin was specifically targeting her and trying to throw the election to Trump."

Adding:

"But mostly, she was mad — mad that she'd lost and that the country would have to endure a Trump presidency."

Same.
