Abigail Breslin shocked many of her fans a couple weeks ago by revealing she had once been sexually assaulted by someone she knew.

Sadly, some knew all too well that a great many women are keeping that same secret.

The amount of rapes that go unreported is staggering, and it's a statistic the Dirty Dancing actress thought was worth sharing.

She took to her Instagram over the weekend and posted:

Unfortunately, these numbers proved too controversial for a few commenters, including one who said:

"Reported rapes are the only rapes that count."

As far as we're concerned that's too ignorant to even warrant a response. But it rubbed Abigail the wrong way, enough so that she didn't just come at the commenter with schooling — she hit him with TRUTH.

First, she explained the several reasons she didn't report her rape, including that she was in denial, that she was in a relationship with her assaulter, and that she "feared not being believed."

"I also feared that if my case didn't lead anywhere he would still find out and hurt me even more."

She also revealed that she was diagnosed with PTSD. Even after a year and a half of treatment for post traumatic stress disorder, it's still taking a toll on her life:

"I have made a lot of progress since the event occurred, but I won't pretend it isn't something I struggle with. I still have flashbacks, I still get nightmares, I still jump when somebody touches me unexpectedly, even if it's my best friend tapping me on the shoulder."

We're in awe of her being candid about all of this now. It must have taken so much courage.
